Snowy Adventures in Mt. Hood Territory

November 22, 2013 (Updated December 6, 2016)

Get it while it’s cold with an escape to the wild and wonderful Mt. Hood Territory. Whether you’re on skis, a snowboard, snowshoes, or just there to cozy up to the fireplace with a good book, Mt. Hood is a beautiful destination to experience the wonder of winter.

Choose your snowy adventure
Strap on snowshoes for a moonlight woodland hike. Mt. Hood Adventure not only ferries the fuel and feeds the bonfire, they’ll fix your cocoa and make sure your marshmallows are toasted to perfection, too. Mt. Hood Adventure also holds the only permit in Mt. Hood National Forest to rent, guide or deliver snowmobiles to satisfy your need for speed. Round out your trip with a cross-country ski tour to access the backcountry and commune with nature.

Cosmic tubing
Join the party on the snow at Mt. Hood Skibowl‘s east side Friday and Saturday nights, where Cosmic Tubing mixes it up with laser lights, reflective snow tubes and a rocking sound system. Strap on cross-country skis and head out from your doorstep onto the groomed trails in and around Government Camp to take in the serenity of the alpine meadows and woods. Plus, pony up for old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh rides during the holidays.

Ski and snowboard Mt. Hood
Celebrate the snow at WPA-era Timberline Lodge and join Olympic hopefuls on the slopes for North America’s longest ski season. Join in night skiing and fireworks at Mt. Hood Skibowl, America’s largest night ski area. Families enjoy the heritage of Summit Ski Area, the Northwest’s oldest designated ski zone. Don’t miss the mountain’s special events including Ski the Glade Trail, Snow Beach Festival and skill competitions. Whatever you choose, make sure you end your day with hot cocoa or a craft brew by the fire at the historic lodge.

Winter catch
Some of the best year-round fishing spots in Oregon are found on this area’s Sandy and Clackamas rivers. Try your luck at winter steelhead from a drift boat, or perfect your fly-fishing cast in search of the elusive catch. Seasoned fishing outfitters are ready to share favorite fishing holes and provide the gear you need, topped off with a streamside gourmet lunch with all the fixings.

Cozy up indoors
Settle in for a cozy winter’s night at Lake Oswego’s Lakewood Theatre Company, the oldest continuously operating theater company in the Portland area. Or get your shopping on at Clackamas Town Center, one of Oregon’s largest shopping malls.
