How to Recharge Along the Clackamas River

June 14, 2022
Oregon’s Highway 224 cuts deep into the piney woodlands and river country southeast of Portland in the Mt. Hood National Forest, but recent wildfire-impacted conditions forced a closure of the road, cutting off access to scores of campgrounds, hiking trails and access points to the frothy Clackamas River for nearly two years. As of May 2022 that’s changed, and 19 miles of the road are open again, just in time for summer fun. More

How to Win the Weekend in Roseburg

It’s been 150 years since a train first whistled to a halt in Roseburg, an industrial feat that forever changed the city. Some things went boom and some things went bust, but over the decades, two truths still hold fast: Roseburg, with a quiet downtown surrounded by vibrant nature, still serves as a central base camp for easy day trips to the Coast, Crater Lake National Park and Diamond Lake. But it’s also a worthy stop on its own. With a thriving arts scene, great... More

Imaginative chefs and entrepreneurs have had an indelible impact on Oregon’s culinary landscape thanks to the soaring popularity of the food cart. Family-Friendly Weekend in the Wallowas

May 16, 2022
Summer ushers in family road trip fun in Oregon, particularly on spectacular mountain roads that open once again once the snow melts. That’s true in Northeast Oregon, where one of the state’s most scenic routes, Forest Service Road 39 — aka Wallowa Mountain Loop Road — typically reopens by mid-June. The road winds through the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and connects towns like Halfway with Joseph, Enterprise and the Wallowa Valley.  The road’s reopening means road-trippers can once again make an unforgettable loop out of the...

Find Rejuvenation in Oregon’s High Desert

April 25, 2022
Oregon may claim the best craggy coasts, misty forests and icy volcanoes around, but venture east of the Cascades and you enter the wild high desert, a magnificent land of yawning canyons and windswept steppes where the sky’s so big and blue, you swear you can feel it on your shoulders.  May marks a special time to visit, too, as the desert sheds its winter skin and transitions into a world bursting with life. The pronghorn antelope have their babies, the balsamroot explodes like sundrops... More
