Named for a scenic river, Metolius is tucked between some of the region’s most idyllic outdoor destinations.

Head west to Lake Billy Chinook, where three rivers converge, or try to find the mysterious balancing rocks along the Deschutes. To the east are the Ochocos, where hikers and mountain bikers spend their days exploring. After a long adventure, this peaceful town is the perfect place to recharge.

I suggest the 7-mile Tam-a-láu Trail loop hike near Lake Billy Chinook. It features a mile-long climb to the top of a lava plateau called the Peninsula, which separates the Deschutes River and Crooked River arms of Lake Billy Chinook.
