The Coffin Lookout Trail (#3392) is a moderate to difficult 1.5 mile hike that offers a shorter route to the staffed fire lookout on Coffin Mountain than does Trail 3425 (Coffin Mountain Trail) on the mountain’s west slope. Lookout is staffed during fire season. The vegetation is old-growth Douglas-fir forest changing to subalpine mountain hemlock and creeping juniper. Bring your own water, lookout will not provide.
Directions: From Detroit: Follow Hwy. 22 east from Detroit Ranger Station for 21 miles; turn onto Road 11 (Straight Creek road). Follow to the second junction with Road 1168. (Do not turn at the first 1168 junction; the eastern half of Road 1168 is very rough and is gated from August 15 to November 30.) Follow to Road 450. Trail begins to the right of Road 450 near its junction with Road 1168.
Seasonal Access: Normally Open: Late Spring-Early Fall
Facility Type: Trail
