About Silver Falls State Park

Silver Falls State Park

People call it the “crown jewel” of the Oregon State Parks system, and once you visit, you know why.

Silver Falls State Park is the kind of standout scenic treasure that puts Oregon firmly onto the national—and international—stage. Its beauty, boundless recreational opportunities and historic presence keep it there.

Nestled in the foothills of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains, less than an hour east of the state capital of Salem, the sprawling 9,200-acre property is the largest state park in Oregon, and one of the most popular.

Waterfalls:  Where else can you walk behind a waterfall? Check out the famous South Falls and see what a 177-foot curtain of water looks like from behind. It’s part of the Trail of Ten Falls, a spectacular, nationally recognized hiking trail that weaves through a dense forested landscape. The trail passes a series of breathtaking waterfalls along a rocky canyon, and descends to a winding creek at the forest floor. This 7.2 mile loop is considered to be a moderate hike, with an overall elevation change of 800 feet. Several connecting trails with separate access points make shorter routes. For everyone’s safety— absolutely no pets allowed on the Canyon Trail. Pets on leash are allowed on all other trails.

Boots, bikes, paws, hooves: The park offers more than 25 miles of backcountry trails for mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding. Bears and cougars live in the more remote park areas.

Daytime activities: The South Falls Day-use area has spacious lawns, barbecue stands, picnic shelters, tables, a playground, horseshoe pits, an off-lead area for dogs, and a charming creek. Ever since the opening day in 1933, visitors have been using these grounds for potlucks, family reunions and weddings. The new North Canyon Day-use area has picnic tables, ADA-accessible restroom and 59 new parking spots, including three that are ADA accessible. The new area also provides access to the Nature Play Area for kids and the new accessible North Rim Trail with viewpoint of North Falls.

Overnight: The main campground has tent sites, RV spots and cabins. Bring your horse and stay in the horse campground. Smith Creek Village at Silver Falls is a retreat center nestled in Silver Falls State Park with a restaurant, dining area, and lodging including 13 cabins and four group lodges as well as outdoor event space, historic buildings, meeting areas and a commercial kitchen. Nearby, the Davidson Ranch and Foothills Ranch are two historic lodges with commercial kitchens that also offer room for outdoor camping under the stars.

Silver Creek Falls Never Fail to Amaze

After the recent rains the falls were stunning. We had a sunny, mild day with few others on the Canyon and Maple Ridge trails. As always, watch where you're going as the trail can be rocky and rough. Walking under the falls is always a treat. Remember - when you go downhill in a canyon you always have to get back up the other side. Take water for the hike. Definitely make a stop at the little gift shop. Staffed by volunteers, the selection is terrific and the staff are great. From there we went to the Smith Creek Village Cafe. New to us, the former scout camp is very comfortable, the menu is reasonably priced (flatbreads, sandwiches, salads, fresh baked pastrys) and the staff was friendly and knew about the area. We would definitely return the next time we're at the park and highly recommend it.

    Beautiful views and exciting trails

Visited the park with my wife, daughter, and her husband. We took a two and half hour walk around the park and saw several waterfalls, including one you could walk behind. Some of the views were really special. Our daughter loaned us walking poles, which made the walk much safer for us. The trail varied from easy to moderate. Rocks and roots on the trail weren't that bad, but the climb near the end definitely took a lot out of us. Still, my wife and I were only slightly slower than the 'youngsters' with us.

    Another beautiful Oregon park

Gorgeous park, ample parking, beautiful well maintained trails and waterfalls - small cafe - highly recommend for hikers of all abilities (we are older and just walked to South Falls but could plan hours of hiking here very comfortably)

    Awful trail signage

Lovely park for beauty. Camping is great. But signage on the trails is awful! When there is two or more ways to go, there are many places with no signs to help you. I asked a ranger about this he was very defensive. He told me it was because people removed signs and that other people complained there was to many direction signs, WTF! Use GPS

Great day out enjoying amazing scenery

This is a beautiful State Park. The trails are well marked and maintained. The falls are magnificent and it is very unique to be able to walked behind some of the falls. The webpage says the parking is $5; however, it was $12. You need the exact change or use a credit card. I would suggest using a credit card as I saw one lady try several different bills and all were rejected. You can do as many or few of the hikes as you want as there are different loops or trails to take depending on your ability level.
