Affectionately known as The Castle, the Flippin House is a National Historic Site owned by Clatskanie Senior Citizens, Inc. since 1979. Built from 1898–1902 by Thomas and Florence Flippin, using timber from their own logging crews, the home blends Queen Anne, Chateauesque, and Classical Revival styles—designed by Markwell & Sons.
Unique hand-hewn shingles feature a moonwalker, comet, and star on one side, and diamond patterns on the other. Though the Flippins lived there briefly, The Castle passed through various owners and served as a rooming house before George and Anne Salmi began restoration in the 1960s and opened it for tours.
Now home to a senior center and the Clatskanie Historical Society Museum (since 2017), the site recently underwent a major $600,000 restoration to return its upper floors to their 1900s elegance.
