Multnomah Falls

Plummeting 620 feet, in two different sections, Multnomah Falls is the most-visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million visitors each year. 

Fed by underground springs, the flow over the falls varies and is usually highest during the winter and spring months. Multnomah Falls offers one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods. Six flows of Grande Ronde Basalt are visible in the fall’s cliff face, representing more than 400,000 years of geological history.

On the lower level of Multnomah Falls Lodge there is a public Visitor Center, snack bar, gift shop and adjacent accessible restrooms. The fully accessible restaurant is located on the upper level and can be accessed by stairs or elevator. The Visitor Center is jointly staffed by Friends of Multnomah Falls volunteers and the Forest Service. Offerings include a simple trail map and brochures about Multnomah Falls in multiple languages.

    Excellent visit, worth the time spent

    A short drive from central Portland, worth every minute of it, you get to pass a really scenic area and other waterfalls around here. Book to park at Multnomah falls itself, only a couple of dollars, make sure you go to the car park just off the interstate, the car park closest to the falls is private and expensive, the 2 dollar car park is and extra 3 minute walk only! Nice short walk to see the falls from all angles.

    Rude customer service, and pay pay pay!

    Beware! Need to book in advance. Went here and was told to wait 2hrs and had to pay. Parking in main lot is $20 a car, the other is a timed pay. Customer service is extremely rude, a guy with a beard was very unprofessional.

    Multnomah-Wahkeena falls loop, arriving by bus

    Use the CAT Bus Columbia Gorge express from Portland (Gateway Transit Center) to avoid parking or timed entry hassles. The falls are crowded, but as you go higher the crowds will thin; veer left near the top for some additional smaller, quieter, beautiful falls, and consider doing the whole loop to Wahkeena Falls.

    No More Roadtrip Spontaneity

    What a horrible experience. The parking lot is half empty, and the earliest permit you can get is 90 minutes out and the permission of 2 teenage girls to see Multnomah Falls. Oregon continues to decline in the experience it offers. How disappointing.

    Money-grubbing at its worst

    Multnomah Falls - what a scam. We parked and then walked over to the walking tunnel to go under the road to the falls and were stopped by some workers who said that you had to pre-book and that the next available time was at 4 pm. (it was morning when we got there) There were SO many people just like us who were disappointed to discover that. There should be signage all over the place warning you that you have to pre-book. It really stunk. Plus, why? I suspect it is a money-making venture. I could not see any reason at all to not just open it up to the public. Most people would walk up to the falls, walk across the viewing platform and leave. It would not be overcrowded; it would not be unsafe; this was just money-grubbing pure and simple. Do better, Oregon.
