Multnomah Falls

Plummeting 620 feet, in two different sections, Multnomah Falls is the most-visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million visitors each year. 

Fed by underground springs, the flow over the falls varies and is usually highest during the winter and spring months. Multnomah Falls offers one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods. Six flows of Grande Ronde Basalt are visible in the fall’s cliff face, representing more than 400,000 years of geological history.

On the lower level of Multnomah Falls Lodge there is a public Visitor Center, snack bar, gift shop and adjacent accessible restrooms. The fully accessible restaurant is located on the upper level and can be accessed by stairs or elevator. The Visitor Center is jointly staffed by Friends of Multnomah Falls volunteers and the Forest Service. Offerings include a simple trail map and brochures about Multnomah Falls in multiple languages.

    No More Roadtrip Spontaneity

    What a horrible experience. The parking lot is half empty, and the earliest permit you can get is 90 minutes out and the permission of 2 teenage girls to see Multnomah Falls. Oregon continues to decline in the experience it offers. How disappointing.

    Money-grubbing at its worst

    Multnomah Falls - what a scam. We parked and then walked over to the walking tunnel to go under the road to the falls and were stopped by some workers who said that you had to pre-book and that the next available time was at 4 pm. (it was morning when we got there) There were SO many people just like us who were disappointed to discover that. There should be signage all over the place warning you that you have to pre-book. It really stunk. Plus, why? I suspect it is a money-making venture. I could not see any reason at all to not just open it up to the public. Most people would walk up to the falls, walk across the viewing platform and leave. It would not be overcrowded; it would not be unsafe; this was just money-grubbing pure and simple. Do better, Oregon.

    Great Visit to Multnomah, Wahkeena, Fairy and Horsetail Falls

    We parked at Wahkeena Falls (free parking, no timed permit required), walked to Wahkeena Falls (easy and not far from parking) and then did the hike up to Fairy Falls. That hike has quite the elevation but is beautiful! After walking back down to the parking lot, we walked over to Multnomah and enjoyed those falls from below and from the bridge further up (another quick and easy walk). It's gorgeous and we loved it. On our way out, we stopped quickly at Horsetail Falls. You can wet your feet at this one, if you want. Another beautiful falls.

    Great falls to hike to top

    Great view. Tallest falls over 642ft. Can access from reserved parking lot, trolley tours, or while hiking from wahkeena trail. Amazing view. Lodge & restaurant, snacks available before and after hike. Even during construction, all amenities are available. Hike up to viewpoint is quite hard, 1 mile each way, 542ft elevation, but very worth the view, and to feel the ice cold water! Wear appropriate hiking gear, no railings, so be advised with young children and old people if climbing up to top of falls. Bridge hike is only 0.2 miles, easy hike.

    Great falls views.

    A great waterfall attraction that is right off of the highway. Plenty of parking, Nice shop. You get a great view of the falls.
