About Crater Lake

Crater Lake

From high atop the rim of Crater Lake, you can see what a wonder the world really is.

A hike down to the water reveals new wonders. The water is so blue, so deep, it’s no surprise it’s the deepest lake in America, and one of the deepest on earth. That’s why it’s one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

Surrounded by cliffs almost 2,000 feet high and boasting a picturesque island a violent volcanic past, Crater Lake is also home to hikes in old-growth forest and cross-country ski trips in the winter months. Many of the roads and facilities close during the winter, but the park is open and accessible all year long. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States.

Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon, which is also home to the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the stunning Rogue River, the Oregon Caves and vineyards, chocolatiers and cheesemakers galore.

Climate:

Most visitors come to Crater Lake National Park during the months of July through mid-September, when the weather is generally mild with little precipitation. Due to the elevation of the park (6,500 ft. at Park Headquarters and 7,100 ft. at Rim Village), weather conditions may change quickly and a warm jacket and wool sweater are always recommended items to carry. During the winter months, from October through June, weather conditions make preparing for extreme winter conditions necessary. Blizzards, high winds, extreme cold and low visibility dominate the weather patterns. Visitors should come with cold weather gear.

Recreation:

A good place to begin your visit to Crater Lake is at one of the two visitor centers. The Steel Information Center lies south of Rim Drive next to park headquarters and is open year-round. In the summer, the Rim Village Visitor Center is open along Rim Drive on the southern side of the caldera. After gathering information on the park and its facilities visitors can make educated decisions about what recreation opportunities to pursue. Hiking, backpacking, camping, picnicking and sight seeing are popular pursuits within the park. Boating and scenic driving around Rim Drive can be enjoyed by visitors during the summer months. In winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing provide solitude and a little-known view of the park.

    Beautiful National Park

6/18/26 We arrived at 2pm to the South Entrance. First we stopped at the Steel Visitor Center to watch the movie about the National Park. It was very informative- I recommend spending the 30 min watching that. The Ranger also explained why the lake is so blue ( it is because of the clean water and the sunlight). Then we drove to several viewpoints to the West since the East road was closed for construction. There was no snow on the roads. We hiked the Watchman Peak Trail. It is very steep but only took us 50 min to go up, look around and come down (1.6 miles roundtrip). There was still piles of snow along the trail so we had a snowball fight! Beautiful view of the lake from the top! We continued to drive past the North Entrance to see how far we could get before the road was closed. There was hardly anyone on the North-East side of the park at the viewpoints. We were able to spot “ The Old Man of the Lake” which is a tree stump that has been floating around the lake since 1896. Only 4 feet of it is above water but we found it! We did not have time to visit the Rim Village area since they closed at 5pm.

Sunrise over the lake was breathtaking

A beautiful place. We were lucky to visit with few crowds. Sunrise over the lake was breathtaking - highly recommend. Lots of hiking options, but check with staff as some were not accessible.

One of the most beautiful national parks in the US

An absolutely stunning natural site! I've been to a lot of the US national parks, and this is at the top in terms of sheer beauty. It's a bit of a snaking drive up the side of the mountain, but when you reach the rim you're rewarded with views of a brilliantly blue lake in the crater of the volcano. All of the activies in the park are around the rim or outside of it. You cannot go much below the rim level, and cannot get to the lake itself. There is a road around the rim, although portions might be closed due to snowfall. The main lodge is on the south side, however I took the northern entrance (off state route 138) and found this drive much less crowded. Grab some brochures for the various different hiking trails. Note that some of the parking lots can get packed on weekends. They are not huge, so it's best to arrive early. Plan to spend most of the day here if you want to go all the way around the rim and hike some of the well-maintained trails. If you just spend your time around the lodge and visitor centre, still plan a half day including the drive in and out.

    Insane Views!!!!!!!

Crater Lake is honestly unreal. It’s the deepest lake in the USA, and because it’s filled entirely by rain and snow, the water is a crazy, crystal clear blue that doesn't even look real. Driving the 33 mile Rim Drive gives you insane views from every angle. If you’re feeling brave, hike down to the water for a quick, freezing dip it’s a total rush and a perfect Oregon adventure!

    Crater Lake

Went during the Diamond Lake fire so it was a bit hazy. We stayed in Klamath Falls and saw some huge wildlife and amazing sunsets.
