A Winter Wonderland in Central Oregon

November 18, 2013 (Updated December 6, 2016)

Visit Central Oregon in the winter and experience the sunshine, blue skies and dry, deep powder at Mt. Bachelor in Bend and Hoodoo Ski Area in Sisters. In addition to world-renowned downhill skiing and snowboarding, Nordic skiing, snowshoe tours, tubing, and sled dog rides, snowmobiling is also enjoyed on trails throughout the Deschutes National Forest at Paulina Lake and East Lakes in La Pine. Here are some ideas to start planning your wintercation:

Go for a spin on ice
The resort community of Sunriver offers a covered ice skating rink in The Village at Sunriver. Nestled at the base of Mt. Bachelor in Bend, take a lesson and spin away at the beautiful rink at Seventh Mountain Resort. Or head to downtown Redmond to try the city’s new outdoor ice skating rink.

Plan a cozy-cation
Escape the busy city and stay in cozy accommodations at Sunriver Resort. Nestled in a beautiful high desert meadow and surrounded by towering Ponderosa Pines, snuggle up next to a crackling fire for a warm winter’s rest, or be rejuvenated at the luxurious Sage Springs Spa. Take a leisurely stroll to the new Sunriver Brewing Company and tax-free shopping at unique boutiques. If cabin fever sets in, head to the heart of Sunriver for exciting snow tubing at the new SHARC, and be intrigued by Central Oregon’s living history at the High Desert Museum, just minutes away.

Get tasting
Even after the farmers’ markets close and snow covers the Cascades, the local culinary scene is alive with creative culinary tours of The Well Traveled Fork. Join them on a Farm & Ranch Tour while visiting hard-working Central Oregon farmers and ranchers who still manage to raise animals and grow produce through winter’s chill. Or take a wintry stroll through Bend on one of their Follow the Fork Walking Tours, where you’ll sip and sample your way through locally-owned food businesses and warm up with roasted coffee, fresh baked treats and other local delights.

Winter watering holes
With the highest per capita ratio of restaurants in the state located in the city of Bend, it’s  no wonder that some of the state’s finest dining venues can be found in Central Oregon. This region complements its fine food as a well-known “watering hole,” offering award-winning microbrews and sprits. For the ultimate apres ski experience, hop on a Brew Tour, or tour of the main brewing facility of the Deschutes Brewery, the company that pioneered the region’s craft brewing industry twenty-five years ago.
