The good, the bad and my beef
Well I wasn’t sure what to expect given that Grants Pass is such a culinary wasteland, which I realize is an artifact of the population. So I was looking for a ‘fine dining’ experience for my anniversary. My wife and I are both ‘foodies’ and do count our experiences when we occasionally dine out and have been to some amazing places in the world. So the iconic, in its truest sense, Taprock right in the river seemed like a nice choice. Let’s call the ambiance pole-lodge chic.Vaulted ceilings and pretty bright lighting. When we arrived two hostesses asked if they could help. When I mentioned I had a reservation they didn’t show us to our table, they pointed to the stairs and moved us along. (I am used to a host(ess) showing me to my table, especially when they're not busy.) Okay so we go downstairs and stand there, no acknowledges us and I finally ask where we should sit, to which the reply is “Anywhere.” Okay, is this self-serve too? Okay on to the menu. Certainly not fine dining and more of what I would call PNW Basic: no variety Steak, a pasta, a chicken dish and grilled salmon. More like bar and grill fare. Appetizers were also uninspired, but we opted for the burrata, which they buy in and are not made there. It arrived promptly and it was a large plate of cherry tomatoes and toasted rounds and a small burrata with balsamic and pesto. It was nice, but it also would have been nice to get two small plates so that the crumbling bread would have a place to fall and put down after a bite. But not gonna happen. So on to the mains, I had the 10 oz ribeye and my wife the ribs and fries. The steak was the highlight as it was done perfectly medium rare, but I would have preferred they NOT place it on top of the mashed potatoes, resulting in quite a mess on the plate. Still it was tasty, but how hard is it to throw a hunk of meat on a grill and cook it for three minutes? My wife said my barbeque sauce was better than what she had because she found it too sweet. And what can you say about fries. Finally, and I admit this is a pet peeve of mine: TAKE OFF YOUR HATS!! When did it become okay to wear your hat at the dining table? Well, I do have to remember this is GP where going out means you wear your cleanest flannel shirt.

Never going back
Service not really very good. Ordered meatloaf, mashed potatoes w/brown gravy and asparagus was the vegetable. Mashed potatoes (just okay) in the middle of the plate. Asparagus laid across the potatoes, and little rounds of meatloaf on top with a fresh topping of catchup. The gravy was horrendous, as were the potatoes and asparagus with catchup on them...Dennys does netter

Slow service
Service was slow and the waiter sparsely seen. I understand busy but the wait time was rather ridiculous. I’m not sure if it’s a staffing issue but we have encountered this several times. So much potential with A beautiful venue. Please don’t take this negatively. I only hope it gets better.

Great river views
Good river views and plentiful outdoor seating. Good for large groups. Enjoyed cocktails, calamari, and bread pudding here. Better to have a reservation or try your luck sitting just the bar (the entire floor downstairs).
