A great dining experience!
We spent the night in Burns and ate dinner at El Toreo Mexican Restaurant on the recommendation of the motel staff for a good sit down meal. She was right. Set on the main street in the middle of downtown, it was a smaller space than we expected. Arriving just before 6:p.m. on a weeknight was a good thing as it got busier than we expected. It was pretty full and seemed like a very popular place with Burns locals. Even though the space is on the smaller size, table spacing allowed for quiet conversation in a pleasant atmosphere. Everything was very clean. No waiting for seating when we arrived, but that may not be the case on weekends! Lots of menu options with pricing somewhat higher than we expected based on experience, the meal was definitely worth the cost. Our order was taken timely, but food service seemed to have been slowed down by the size of the crowd. When the food arrived, the presentation was very nice. It was worth the wait. Everything was very hot and not the usual Mexican restaurant production meal. Great care had gone into what was very fresh and unusually flavorful entries. One meal was a chicken chimichanga and the other was Pollo a la Creama. Having experienced these entries elsewhere and often, these were a step above. Unusual flavoring that was very tasteful. Well worth the cost. If in Burns again, we would make a point to try this restaurant again.

Great food, great service, great lunch if you are passing through
El Toreo is a terrific spot -- comfortable, clean, a welcoming host and great service. And the food is delicious, nicely presented and portions are generous. We stopped for gas while journeying across the state and timed it just right to grab a nice relaxing lunch here before trekking on. We made haste getting out of Burns -- not a place where I'd want to linger a moment more than necessary. But if, like us, you are traveling across Oregon and hit this town at mealtime, you can't do better than El Toreo.

Okay food, busy place
There are fewer options for eating out in Burns than there were pre-Covid. The Casino, Chinese. and Castle restaurants are all permanently closed. We went here based on the motel's suggestion with only two options open besides fast food. The waiter/bartended was the only front staff on duty. Like most other places, they can't get the help. The food wasn't the best Mexican cuisine we've had, but it was tasty enough and sufficient in quantity. The salsa and bean dips offered with the warm chips were especially good.

Okay Mexican Food
I had dinner of a margarita and Chile Verde. The staff was very pleasant seating and serving me. The margaritas were good, but not outstanding. The Chile Verde was unfortunately bland, not spicy at all, and rather tasteless. The sides of rice and refried beans were equally bland. Other tables having the burritos (looked large) seemed to be enjoying themselves.
