Nice menu, cocktails, service-we hope to return.
Charming '1930's decor, good location for theater goers, nice bar-great cocktails. My husband found his braised short ribs of beef satisfying. I enjoyed my "duck confit" which seemed to be a modern take on the dish-sort of deconstructed, with a layer of the beans and sausage on the bottom and a roast duck leg on a bed of frisee on top of it. I suppose it is less greasy this way, better for modern tastes. Service was good, prices are ok. My husband commented it cost less than another favorite restaurant we go to and I replied that we didn't order bread, salad or dessert and so weren't paying for them.

Get a new Chef
We eat here every time we come to Ashland which is about 4 times a year. New chef new menu. I ordered the boneless rack of lamb appetizer. Ordered it pink to medium rare. It arrived blue. I should have sent it back, but that would have ruined the whole dinner. Tried to eat some of the somewhat cooked pieces but left most of it on the plate. No one asked why I didn’t eat it. Later that night ended up with horrible stomach pains which lasted four days. Won’t be back.

Very Disappointing
Visited Alchemy in October 2025 with very high hopes. It was a special splurge night out, and we were looking forward to a fine dining experience, which is definitely the expectation for this place. "An extraordinary dining experience." Indeed. The location itself is nice, an old converted house right in the heart of Ashland. The setting is warm and inviting. The staff and service were professional and friendly (with one exception), and very pleasant. Not very attentive though -- empty glasses were ignored, and we had to flag someone down to report an issue. The problem leading to a 2-star review? The food and some aspects of the customer service. We ordered two of the Special appetizers. One was an elevated 'Chips and Dip'. Unfortunately the chips were very salty kettle-style chips, which couldn't stand up to the dip, breaking into shards. The dip was pretty, but tasted like a faintly seasoned sour cream. The second dish was a scallop crudo which was literally swimming in a bowl of not-much-flavor cream sauce. We had to fish around to find the scallops. Very disappointing. Putting some Salmon Roe caviar on the plate does not excuse the lack of flavor! Then was the steak ordered Medium Rare, that was bloody red and barely room temp in the center. Closer to Blue than to Medium Rare. My partner pointed out that this was *very* rare, and sent it back. Worse is that it was sliced, so the improper doneness was visible to the chef, but they sent it anyway. It came back barely different, carried by someone who might have been the Manager (didn't introduce himself). When my partner pointed out that it still wasn't right, he informed us that their chefs had made it "perfectly". Bad news fella, when the diner isn't happy, it isn't "perfect". I don't know if he even picked up that he was making us very angry, but he finally picked it up for another try. Third time it arrived more-or-less cooked properly. I had long since finished my main -- seared scallops can't wait. My partner was hungry enough to eat it in spite of irritation. They 'generously' comped us *half* the steak, though the meal was basically ruined. The tl:dr: Pros - Pleasant environment, nice wine, excellent seared scallops Cons - service mediocre to terrible (guy in polo), very questionable cooking At these prices, they should be doing much, much better than this.

FIND ANOTHER PLACE
Alas, Alchemy had a new chef and he/she has changed the menu. We missed several dishes that we love, including the mushroom custard!!! They were not able to serve the cheese plate and several other appetizers due to staffing issues -- another disappointment. The dishes we did have were substandard at best. So sad!! We traveled back through town the next week and DID not eat at Alchemy again.

Another memorable meal with impeccable service
World-class dinner ... again. Delicious fresh salad special using local greens, yummy warm red pepper soup, fabulous braised lamb in a scrumptious thick glaceé, delicious housemade breads, and excellent small wine list that easily matched up with our meal. And the included breakfast the next morning after our overnight stay on-site at the Winchester was equally elegant and tasty, especially the baked-to-order croissants, meat lovers' scramble, and vegetable frittata on a bed of really fresh baby spinach.
