You told your family you’d be right back; just a quick trip to the small-town mercantile to grab a few things — firewood, a six-pack, marshmallows. Who knew you’d get lost in a wonderland of craft beer, gourmet cheeses and coastal culinary delights? Visit these small grocery stories along the Coast and you’ll unearth a treasure trove of surprising delights.

Manzanita Market Grocery & Deli: Behind the unassuming screen door of the Manzanita Market, you’ll find all the supplies for your coastal campfire, and then some. There’s a bright corner of organic produce, a cold case packed with fresh catch, gourmet cheeses and salamis, a fully stocked section craft beer and wine, high-end chocolates and other organic goodies. Don’t miss the house-made kimchi. And in between all that is every practical sundry item you’ll need for a week at the Coast.

Yachats Farmstore: The warm exterior of the Yachats Farmstore hints at the culinary delights you’ll find inside — a hub of organic produce, sustainably raised meats, house-smoked salmon, fresh eggs and farmstead cheese all housed in a building of reclaimed old-growth timber handcrafted by the owner. But you’ll also discover 19 taps pouring beers (three from the store’s own nano-brewery), cider and kombucha as well as all the great gardening supplies and sustainable home products you could wish for.

Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House: This Cannon Beach spot provides everything for a building, gardening or painting project (as well as camping supplies and beach toys) while sharing a space with a lively taproom. Stop by to pick up a kite for the kids and stay for a glass of wine, a pint of craft beer and a delicious menu of appetizers, burgers and sandwiches.

Neskowin Trading Company: Just south of Pacific City (and north of Proposal Rock), you might miss the town of Neskowin if you weren’t on the lookout for the Neskowin Trading Company. This market, deli and wine shop has that local knowledge thrill in its stores of fine wine, locally made cheeses, imported specialty foods and a deli menu with take-and-bake pizzas and sandwiches as well as a full international menu at the adjacent Beach Club Bistro.

Bandon Bait & Tackle: Fishing license? Check. Bait? Yup. Rental fishing equipment? You betcha. Bandon Bait & Tackle is the place to gear up for the perfect day out fishing, clamming or crabbing for your own fresh catch. But most people find themselves lingering in the Old Town shop for the already caught  — creamy clam chowder, delicious fish tacos and hot fish and chips.
