Tucked between Reed College and the gentle curves of Crystal Springs Creek, this seven-acre urban oasis is a floral paradise hidden within Portland’s southeast neighborhoods. Originally a test garden for rhododendron enthusiasts in the 1950s, it has blossomed into a beloved public garden showcasing thousands of rhododendrons, azaleas, and companion plants that burst into color each spring.
Meandering paths and wooden bridges wind through landscaped gardens, tranquil ponds, and waterfalls, creating a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers — more than 90 species of birds have been spotted here.
Visitors can relax on shaded benches, picnic on the lawn, or simply stroll the looping footpaths to admire blooms reflected in the garden’s glassy waterways. With seasonal plant sales, special events, and peak blooms from late March through May, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a living canvas of color and calm at the city’s edge.
