Dark cave under the desert Challenging but fun. Wouldn't recommend for anyone with a physical challenge, claustro phobia, or you
Cave is under the desert out in the middle of nowhere. Be sure you have water, lights, jacket, good shoes, and knee pads would be nice. Exciting crawling around and over boulders through narrow passage ways. We were the only ones in there so be sure you let someone know before you lose signal outside where you are. There will be passages that you have to low crawl. About three quarters of a mile is how far we went. Novel activity

Awesome but sketchy
Wow, what an experience! This cave is in the middle of nowhere - no buildings or other people. Just a hole in the ground and stairs! You don’t need a parking pass or a ticket-it’s open. Just be aware it’s a little sketchy. Second step is missing and there is no one there to help if you get hurt. Bring at least two good light sources-phone won’t cut it. Wear hiking shoes or good sneakers to climb over dusty rocks. Bring a jacket because it’s about 40 degrees just a few steps down. You have to drive many miles down China hat road-looks like lots of free camping or homeless encampments along the way. The landscape is incredible-such a desert environment with lots of sage brush I think. Super cool. There are other caves in the area run by recreation.gov where you need parking passes and tickets. Lava river cave looks like it’s only open Friday-Monday and you need to reserve tickets ahead of time. Not so with Boyd cave! Some goofy teens arrived as we were leaving just to smoke pot in the cave and then drive like maniacs. Be aware of that possibility.

Interesting and unique cave
Very interesting place. Part of me thought we should skip it since I have been in LOTS of caves, but it was a good place to visit. I agree with other reviewers, that renting the flashlight for $5 was worth it. Tickets go quickly, but we got them by logging onto reservation system right at 7am when tickets get released.

Easily Accessible Spelunking
This is an awfully isolated spot for being so close to the city and I'm surprised more folks do not visit it. I was the only car in the lot when visiting. You will need at least two reliable sources of light to explore. It is pretty wide open like a subway tunnel for awhile. I did not get to the point where it tightens up, but it was a fun walk. I ultimately had more fun and enjoyed the sights more at the ice cave a couple miles up the road, but this is easier to explore for those that don't want to crawl around quite as much.

Cool spot
Great lava cave to go explore close to town. About 1/4 mile deep (at least until some people got claustrophobic... but looks like it goes deeper) with plenty of headroom and fairly good walking surface with a few rock piles to scramble over. Looks like a fun place for kids! Our dogs even went through there, but were happy to get back out to the sunshine. DEFINITELY need a good flashlight or headlamp. Have fun!
