Shimanek Bridge is the only red covered bridge in Linn County. Built in 1966, this is Linn County's newest and longest covered span. Shimanek Bridge is an exception to the usual open-sided covered bridge design with rounded portals. Red paint, portal design and louvered windows are features similar to the original bridge, which was built in 1927. The bridge shares the white painted interior of other Linn County bridges.

Where I was born and raised!
I was raised on the Shimanek Farm! Swam below, fished under and walked to School on the Shimanek Bridge 1939 to 1951 then visited the farm and bridge every year until 2004 when I became incapacitated! I'm 86 and the only way I can visit is to look at my pictures and reflect! I'm the oldest living grandson of John Shimanek who homesteaded the farm and built the first Shimanek Covered Bridge with a toilet inside it! Shimanek Reunions were held each summer in a park on the NW side of the Bridge that I, my dad, uncles & cousins made! Shimaneks from every where came! (Guess Why toilet was inside the Covered Bridge?) Love, Dr.Verne Shimanek

Covered Bridge Tour
Scio, Oregon is called the Covered Bridge Capitol of America. There are six bridges within easy driving distance with the route marked with signs. The wet winter and spring led to building covered bridges in the late 1800's. It's a beautiful route to take on a motorcycle.

One of 6 Covered Bridges in the Scio Area
This is one of 6 Covered Bridges in the Scio Area. Parking near the Shimanek Bridge is a bit tough so taking pictures and walking through it is not as easy as the other ones in the area. As Linn County's newest and longest covered span, the Shimanek Bridge offers an exception to the usual open-sided structure with rounded portals. Red paint, portal design and louvered windows are features similar to the former span, which was built in 1927, and found on no other bridge in Linn County. I highly recommend a visit!
