About Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland’s greatest treasures—a powerfully inspiring experience that takes you through time, offering a window into Chinese culture, history and way of thinking.

The Lan Su Chinese Garden is an authentically built Ming Dynasty scholar's garden with winding walkways, bridged lake and open pavilions framed by an exquisite landscape of stone, water, poetry, architecture and plants native to China.

This tranquil oasis is filled with over 250 species of indigenous Chinese plants, orchids and lotuses, a waterfall and a koi-filled lake. It’s a place to savor a cup of oolong and a fluffy steamed bun in the teahouse, and enjoy the 800-plus ongoing and one-time art, music and cultural programs for the whole family, held almost every day of the week.

Ever changing, Lan Su always has something new to offer – by the minute, by the hour, and with the seasons. Enjoy tranquility and harmony while sipping tea at the Tao of Tea inside this all seasons garden.

    Attractive Gardens and buildings

Very interesting and attractive gardens and buildings. Much smaller than I expected (but still an enjoyable visit). Pricey, given the small size. You might want to consider taking an Uber or Lyft from your hotel. We walked from our hotel and the blocks around the garden were not the most comfortable to walk through (You enter the garden by being buzzed in through s study metal gate. Having walked there, I understand why).

Unexpected Oasis in the Middle of Portland

We had some time between breakfast and when we had to get to the airport, and had decided to go to the Chinese Gardens which are located right in downtown. These gardens were an unexpected surprise, beautiful and peaceful. Loved the story of how Chinese artists/landscapers came here to build the gardens. Lots of hidden little areas, loss of koi, and bonsai trees. Beautiful setting. Only downside is that it is in Chinatown/Old Town which has more unhoused than other DT areas. We had gone first thing in the morning, after we ate breakfast. The gardens weren’t quite open yet, but the employees saw us standing there and directed us to a coffee shop half a block down. Maybe if you go later in the day, there might be less unhoused. I definitely recommend making this a stop if you’re in Portland, and you love gardens!

    Calm and peaceful

My daughter-in-law, granddaughter and I visited during a trip to Portland for my nephew's wedding. The garden is beautiful, calm and peaceful. We took a tour and our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. Definitely worth a visit.
