A Comfortable Stay with Some Frustrating Gaps
The Bidwell is, overall, a solid and comfortable hotel in a very good downtown Portland location, but it’s also a property that feels as though it’s trying to position itself a notch above where the experience currently lands. We reserved three rooms, including two on the M Club level. My corner king room was spacious, attractive and generally comfortable. The room itself felt thoughtfully laid out and had a calm, contemporary feel. But some details were surprisingly underwhelming. For instance, the bathroom in such a large corner room was oddly tiny. And like many Marriott properties, there were a number of simple design oversights that could be fixed so easily. Plush robes were provided, yet there was nowhere to hang them. In fact, there were virtually no hooks at all — not for robes, not for towels — only a very small rack. Little things matter when you’re staying multiple nights. The bedding was another disappointment. The fitted sheet didn’t properly fit the bed and kept bunching up, the pillows felt inexpensive and the bed itself lacked the comfort you’d expect from a higher-end Marriott stay. The coffee setup was also puzzling. The machine either didn’t work or required an engineering degree I didn’t possess; I genuinely still don’t know which after six attempts. But beyond that, this is Portland, a city famous for exceptional coffee culture. Why not elevate the M Club rooms with quality local coffee and a better coffee maker? It felt like a missed opportunity. The biggest challenge during our stay involved housekeeping communication. None of the housekeeping staff we encountered spoke even basic English, which made simple requests unexpectedly difficult. I wasn’t asking for full daily housekeeping — only fresh washcloths and trash removal. But despite pointing to items (like please replace this dirty washcloth with one clean one) and trying repeatedly, we simply couldn’t communicate. When I finally called downstairs, I received a lengthy explanation about the hotel’s green policies and limited room servicing schedules, which completely missed the point of what I was trying to request. Thankfully, one of the managers, Derek, stepped in and completely changed the tone of the experience. He listened, understood the frustration immediately, apologized sincerely and took action. The rooms were refreshed and he generously provided restaurant vouchers as a goodwill gesture. That kind of management responsiveness matters, and Derek deserves credit for making us feel heard rather than dismissed. And then there’s Josh, who may technically work valet, but in many ways seemed like the true heartbeat of the hotel. From the moment we arrived, he remembered all three of our names, greeted guests warmly and managed the constant flow of arrivals and departures with professionalism and genuine kindness. Marriott should hold onto him tightly — employees like that are rare. A note about the M Club: Skip it. The lounge itself is pleasant and well-maintained, but the offerings are underwhelming. Breakfast consisted mainly of runny eggs, bagels and basic continental items and ended crazily early at 9 a.m. The remainder of the day offered small cans of soda, cereal dispensers and inexpensive packaged snacks. It simply didn’t justify the upgrade cost. For the price point, The Bidwell ultimately delivers a good stay, though not quite the elevated experience the branding tries for.

AMAZING
I literally love the location of this hotel. b”Beyond that if you get to experience the smiling faces of both Josh and Derek your stay feels elevated. They make your stay feel like home away from home. Which is key for those of us that travel for work! Their customer service is top notch and so rare these days! Thank you both for being amazing!

Amazing hotel with the friendliest staff
What a wonderful time my husband and I had at the Bidwell and it started the moment we pulled up the hotel and we were greeted by Josh at valet. He was so friendly and gave us the lowdown on Portland and some fantastic recommendations. We only met him the first day but on our last day he still remembered our names - so personable and knowledgeable. Dereck at the front desk was our next stop and he was also so helpful in giving us recommendations and the overview of the hotel. Yenifer and Juan in the M club lounge were also so sweet and immensely kind whenever we popped in. The service alone at the Bidwell is top notch. The rooms are excellent and comfortable and the location in the city is great. We highly recommend staying here and we will be back!

Great time, highly recommend!
I loved my stay at the Bidwell! The staff here is fantastic and are truly the highlight. Tamara and Charli at the front desk were such a pleasure! Tamara gave me restaurant recs (which I tried & enjoyed) and treated me like a friend every time I saw her. Also Josh & Cameron -valet,doormen,hotel hype men - were my guys! They're so dope, I got a chance to chat with them a few times on my trip and they're so welcoming. The staff made me feel like a local more than a visitor. Also fantastic location. There are plenty of coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants, shops in walking distance. Also my work office is only a few blocks away. Spella coffee, St. Honore bakery, and Mediterranean Exploration were the fave places I tried. The rooms were cozy with great bedding, great views, cool under bed lighting, and super clean. Also theres a nice gym with plenty of towels & water. They also have happy hour downstairs. The only issues I had were with my room. When I 1st arrived there was no hand soap in the bathroom (which I found out the hard way) and the room phone didnt work to call the front desk. Also the sink water pressure was low which was a bit difficult to deal with for 3 days since I wash my hands a lot. These are small inconveniences though and I really advise anyone to stay here. I hope to come back.
