Poorly trained staff
Staff was poorly trained or not trained at all. Issues arising at the location were all blamed, by the staff, by employees being new but then blamed on the guest. Check in process was not good, valet service was horrible, and check out process was not good either. Worst experience I have had at all of the Hyatt's I have stayed at.
Great price, close to TriMet
The hotel was great. Cool room and shower. No frills, but great decor. Safe area with a nice restaurant and other options close by. Close to Providence Park for professional soccer matches and Powell Books.
Horrible sleep due to noise.
Disappointing experience. Stayed here three nights in May 2023. Am a 'globalist' and used a coupon to upgrade to a suite. I got the worst sleep I have gotten in a hotel in many years. Throughout the stay, about every 20 minutes, a series of loud bangs came through the walls, as if someone was pounding loudly on the room door (in fact, the first time it happened, we thought that's what it was). Instead it appeared to be a plumbing issue. Nevertheless, having your sleep interrupted multiple times every night by loud bangs is not acceptable. If that were not enough, the walls are thin, which allowed us to also hear the constant noise of the elevators, also among the loudest I've heard in a hotel. And, despite being 15 floors up, the glass on the windows is thin, so we could hear the street car every time it rolled by. I consider myself a heavy sleeper, too. The poor light sleepers must go crazy at this noisy hotel. Then there was the matter of the room's HVAC system; the room's temperature was generally unrelated to the temperature actually set on the thermostat. We were hot most of the stay, with the actual temperature never dipping below 73 despite the thermostat being set in the 60s. This made for further uncomfortable sleep, especially since the hotel used different bedding than most Hyatt hotels. This bedding involves only a fitted sheet and a duvet. So, if you just want to be covered by a top sheet due to the room's temperature being warmer than you set, too bad!; a heavy duvet or nothing is your only choice. The suite was roomy and stylish (if you're into concrete floors and an industrial feel) but suffered from a major design flaw: in a 2-room suite, there was no desk (or semblance of one, say a side table that could swing over the couch). So, nowhere to plug in a laptop and work without the device sitting on your lap. It was fine for a personal weekend with little laptop use, but as a business traveler, it would be extremely annoying. Service was odd. The gentleman at check-in was nice, but seemingly clueless as to actual protocols. I had to ask, for example, how the breakfast protocol worked for 'globalist' guests and about all other amenities. All he did was hand me keys. In the room, despite two guests, only one robe was provided. Service in the restaurant was fine. The valet's text service worked well, but the valets themselves were often slow due to high volume and seemed to struggle to use their words: a 'thank you' was typically met with a shrug and, at check-out, the valet handed me the key and walked away, not helping load any of the bags in the car. I can handle my own bags, but I am accustomed to better service at a Hyatt. Overall, a poor experience. One books a hotel in order to sleep, and this hotel failed in almost every respect to deliver on that need, due to the noise. Service was polite enough but lacked the quality for which a full-service hotel should strive.
Nice hotel centrally located. The staff is great! Restaurant and bar nice addition. Would recommend. Be careful of rooms facing the street where Fortune nightclub is. When it lets out around 2AM, on Saturday the noise was so bad it woke me up.
Great location, comfy bed
This is a typical downtown hotel with a small but very nice room. The bed was incredibly comfortable, as you would expect from a Hyatt. The shower in our room felt very upper end. There were nice small touches like a floor light that came on when you got out of bed. The hotel has a workout room which was nicely equipped. And the location is great. Pub trans is within a few steps of the door, Powell's books is right down the street, you're right near the Pearl District where there are great restaurants and shops. We were able to take the Max from the airport, used the Portland Streetcar and buses to get around, so we didn't need to rent a car. (Buy a HOP card and you can save money and time). The staff at Hyatt Centric is friendly and welcoming. One night we came down and they were having a "wine tasting" which essentially was a free happy hour. The restaurant also has a happy hour menu. Breakfast is not included but the restaurant is good and you'll find a variety of restaurants within walking distance. The staff kindly recommended a great ramen place down the street for lunch. It was fab. We'll stay here again next time we're in Portland.
