Must've been nice once. Deferred maintenance is catching up.
We came here as part of a large group, and they did a great job of handling us that way. And for a large group, especially in this area, you can't do better. But otherwise, you might want to try.
The price is good. The people (staff) are amazing. Really nice. Clearly not from Seattle or even Portland; these are nice good interesting folk.
The WiFi took a while to connect, but once connected is surprisingly fast even at the far reaches of the property. That was surprising; it's not a small property.
Location: The Dalles lacks a luxury district, but other than our room backing (i.e. window facing) what seems to be a low-income apartment building, the area is quiet, as far as we could tell, safe. Not much green open space, but that's the whole city really.
First night - no hand towels, no bath mat. Had to request hand towels, didn't bother on bath mat. A/C effective but very very loud. Common gripe in the large group.
The restaurant is well regarded, but maybe that's a bit for lack of options in the area. The bar drinks were mediocre. Many cocktails are made from a commercial mix plus one spirit. But very inexpensive (common in this area). Like less than half what a (better but not high-end) drink in Bellevue would cost.
The mattress was probably decent quality 20 years ago, but significantly past replacement time, with permanent divots.
Our room was on the second floor. The lay-out is several long row units - three I think. Ours had three staircases - each end and middle. Our end was "out of order" - concrete falling apart, exposed rusting rebar. On the bright side, clearly that sign wasn't lying, but it had clearly been that way a long time. So we had to trek to the middle to get back up to our end.
The decaying concrete is through-out the second floor, not dangerous but not good.
We don't need them, but I failed to find any elevators.
We also saw wall paper peeling in multiple places, and both peeling and rotting under in the shower. Even the TV Console veneer was peeling!
On our second night, we ran completely out of body wash and conditioner, with essentially no use. The pumps were large, but just hadn't been filled. The shampoo was low too, but sufficient.
Toilet paper is the thinnest most useless I've ever seen/felt.
But the fridge is very powerful and quiet, and there's a microwave, and even provided paper towels.
Actual work desk with power right there and two (padded dining style, not office, but still) chairs. Six pillows, seemingly of all types.
The room rate was good. There is a pool and hottub; we didn't try them.
So bottom line is, Cousins Inn is, at least for someone from a bigger city with a decent income, a few steps above Motel 6 - fine for a night or two, especially on a budget, but not a place you'd have as a destination.
And I almost feel bad writing this, because the staff really is helpful and nice. But run down is run down.
