About Crater Lake

Crater Lake

From high atop the rim of Crater Lake, you can see what a wonder the world really is.

A hike down to the water reveals new wonders. The water is so blue, so deep, it’s no surprise it’s the deepest lake in America, and one of the deepest on earth. That’s why it’s one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

Surrounded by cliffs almost 2,000 feet high and boasting a picturesque island a violent volcanic past, Crater Lake is also home to hikes in old-growth forest and cross-country ski trips in the winter months. Many of the roads and facilities close during the winter, but the park is open and accessible all year long. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States.

Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon, which is also home to the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the stunning Rogue River, the Oregon Caves and vineyards, chocolatiers and cheesemakers galore.

Climate:

Most visitors come to Crater Lake National Park during the months of July through mid-September, when the weather is generally mild with little precipitation. Due to the elevation of the park (6,500 ft. at Park Headquarters and 7,100 ft. at Rim Village), weather conditions may change quickly and a warm jacket and wool sweater are always recommended items to carry. During the winter months, from October through June, weather conditions make preparing for extreme winter conditions necessary. Blizzards, high winds, extreme cold and low visibility dominate the weather patterns. Visitors should come with cold weather gear.

Recreation:

A good place to begin your visit to Crater Lake is at one of the two visitor centers. The Steel Information Center lies south of Rim Drive next to park headquarters and is open year-round. In the summer, the Rim Village Visitor Center is open along Rim Drive on the southern side of the caldera. After gathering information on the park and its facilities visitors can make educated decisions about what recreation opportunities to pursue. Hiking, backpacking, camping, picnicking and sight seeing are popular pursuits within the park. Boating and scenic driving around Rim Drive can be enjoyed by visitors during the summer months. In winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing provide solitude and a little-known view of the park.

One of the Premier NPS Parks - Amazing Experience

Having been to 52 of the 63 National Parks, I have not been to a bad one; however, there are simply some parks that are the highlights of the US NPS and Crater Lake is one of them. It is a tremendously unique place where a massive volcanic eruption caused the cone of the volcano to collapse on the huge, empty magma chamber and then fill up with rain and snow to form the deepest lake in the US that with no sedimentation or contamination is also the clearest lake in the US. The park has a little bit of everything, mountains, forests, lakes, geothermal activity and wildlife. It is one of the country's great historic parks, and a place you should absolutely visit. We visited with two other couples last year for a three day and three-night stay that was amazing and awesome. Crater Lake, like any NPS property, is easier to experience if you stay in the park as staying outside can add significantly to travel time which means less time to be in the park. You can camp; however, CLNP has one of the historic lodges that is amazing to see and a great place to stay. We loved the Crater Lake Lodge as it puts you in the middle of the park and able to access the lake at any hour. This brings to the second big question of the visit, access. Crater Lake is easily accessed by the Rim Road that makes a beautiful drive around the perimeter of the lake. From there you have access to visitation areas like Rim Village and Cleetwood Cove all the way around the lake. However, during our visit there was a small section of road that was inaccessible for construction. Still, most of the things you will want to do and see are accessible from this road. As for what to do, the favorite thing for our group was the boat tour and actually swimming in the lake at Cleetwood Cove. Unfortunately, shortly after our visit those activities were suspended until 2028 as the park service was rebuilding the trail to Cleetwood Cove. Our next favorite activity was hiking and there are several great trails. We love Garfield Peak and Mount Scott as both provide great vertical hikes with amazing overlooks of the lake. I highly recommend you look at both of those post as you plan, great experiences. We then enjoyed being in the Rim Village where we ate, slept and shopped. It was an incredible stay in Crater Lake National Park, and I highly recommend it as a great visit for you and your family.

    Superb park

Absolutely lovely time here. The lake is BLUE and handsome, bigger than I expected. Despite being there in early August, while it was popular, it was not crowded at all. Plenty of parking as well as pullovers/lookouts. Truly protected nature without commercialism.

Beautiful. Sad the boat tour isn’t running and road closed.

My third time to this national park. Beautiful, sunny day and no smoke. Bought my lifetime annual pass since I turned 62 last month. The ranger in the booth was very friendly and helpful. The road is closed in one area now, so you can’t drive all the way around. Also, the oath down to the lake and the boat tour are out of operation until 2029. However, it’s still worth the visit.

Simply Amazing - An absolute must

This is quite simply a stunning National Park and I would highly recommend anyone to take a visit here. Really friendly staff at the entrance. We paid the $30 entrance for a vehicle which covered our RV. If you have a USA annual pass for the national parks then it would be free. Great views on the drive up, but when you get to the top, the views of Crater Lake are just beautiful. Lots of pull in areas to see the lake from different angles, plus you can drive into the village area that has a cafe, gift shop, restrooms and lots more. There Is a dedicated car park for larger vehicles like RV’s as well which is super. Overall worth visiting and / or taking a detour for. You could easily spend a few hours here exploring.

A unique national park, but without heavy crowds.

When my wife was alive, we stopped here in 2010. Not much has changed. But this time, since it was only me, I hiked the Castle Crest Wildflower Trail, which is an easy 1.4 miles loop from the Steel Visitors Center. I did not do the loop road around the lake, and be advised that the whole loop road might not be available, as they are doing road repair on it. Check ahead if that is important for you to see it. The wildflower trail starts from the Steel Visitors Center, which is south of the Rim Visitors Center. The first part goes through some tall trees along a wide, dusty trail. After crossing a small bridge, it forms a loop through a wet area created by water flowing gently downhill along a hillside. This wet area is where the wildflowers primarily are located. If you have the time, it is a pleasant, easy hike; more like a walk in the woods than a hike.
