Paddling the Willamette Narrows

Sponsored
July 22, 2022
Our kayaks glide almost silently but for the dipping of the paddles as we enter a narrow channel between the west bank of the Willamette River and Little Rock Island, the first of three large islands and several smaller ones that make up the Willamette Narrows. As we pass breathtakingly close below a bald eagle holding sentinel in the top of a tall fir, the silence is broken by a squawking belted kingfisher, annoyed that we have invaded its territory. More

Spring Break RV-ing on the South Coast

February 21, 2017
Lydia broke out her map collection, and we began perusing the state for a spot we hadn’t explored. We quickly realized we’d never ventured to Oregon’s South Coast together, which is surprising, since it has all the trappings of a classic family road trip. More

Day one: Portland to Agness After weeks of waiting for a relentless La Niña to loosen her grip on spring, I spotted a perfect four-day window in the forecast. Maps studied, gear packed and the first 180 miles under my belt, I exited I-5 toward the heart of Southern Oregon’s wine country in the Umpqua… More

The Open Road

August 1, 2010
I'm 300 miles southeast of my home in Portland and I'm spending the next three days exploring Oregon's most remote region. Armed with only a loose plan to head east into the Owyhee country and explore some back-road canyons on my motorcycle, I've left plenty of room in my itinerary for spontaneous turns down interesting-looking… More
