New owners, zero vibe
Recently sold to non locals who have little understanding of Newport. At first we were excited to see improvements, because prior owner and incredibly inept and self centered staff let it deteriorate to a pitiful mess. But now, it's been remodeled to a state of nuetral, sanitized, blandness. Walking in recently felt like we were interrupting a funeral. Very little effort is made on their menu and the kid behind the bar acts like a clerk, who is just there to ring you up. Also, format seems to have flipped to 'family dining. No thanks.

Average food; great service
We sat outside and enjoyed fish and chips. We had lovely meal with friendly service. The food was average fish and chips; noting special. It was also dog friendly. I'd go again.

Steamers Cooked to Perfection
Sandbar was recommended to us by a local as having the best steamed clams. We love steamers so this was a no brainer to go here for lunch. Yes, these steamed clams are amazing; a bucket full of fresh small clams cooked with lots of garlic and wine accompanied by garlic toast. The full bucket is only five dollars more than the half bucket - another no brainer. My friend selected the Caesar Salad in a tortilla bowl and added smoked salmon. She reported that it was very good. Entrance to the restaurant is through the bar and then upstairs with inside or outside seating. This is not a fancy place by any means so don’t go by appearances. They were serving some very good microbrews - I really enjoyed the Dragons Tooth Stout my spouse enjoyed his choice of Donald the Red. Our waiter was Arron; he was very personable, attentive and helpful even though he had to go up and downstairs to the kitchen. We would definitely return.

don't expect empathy or an answer when you have a concern
My friend and I have eaten happily at this place for the last five years once a year while vacationing. Foods good. Atmosphere a bit funky. Wait staff interesting. However, I got food poisoning about 12 hours after eating at the Sandbar last time in August. It may or may not have been the result of eating there. However, when I called to let them know, I was questioned and brushed off. The person who answered the phone said I could not have gotten sick, if my friend didn't. (I have 3 factors that put me at a higher risk of getting food poisoning.) She also told me her husband developed seafood allergies all of a sudden. I am sorry about that. Many bloody stools, vomiting, dizziness and fever are some of what I had. That is not allergy. I also wrote a letter a month ago and heard nothing back. No more Sandbar and Grill for me.

Awesome Clam Chowder!
We stumbled across this restaurant tonight and boy are we glad we did! It has a dive bar atmosphere, but the food and service was spot on. We enjoyed a table upstairs overlooking the beach. We tried the Filet Mignon steak Tuesday special for $10.95 and a bowl of Clam Chowder. Both were perfect! In fact I think that the Chowder was the best I’ve had so far on our Oregon Coast trip!
