Amadeus

After living all over the world, Chef Diana Ramallo opened Amadeus in downtown Salem in 1996. Since then, the restaurant has spanned three generations and become a true family affair.

The family refers to Amadeus as the first “Fork to Mouth” restaurant, a place where you can enjoy your dining experience and know you’re being served the finest, local ingredients. With entrees like brisket, stroganoff and burgers, the menu has something for everyone and even has a special section dedicated to paleo offerings.

TWO AWFUL EXPERIENCES

We had two AWFUL experiences at this restaurant. We went here in May on our way back from Portland to were we live south of Salem. We ordered appetizers and meals. The appetizers came, and then nothing. We were totally ignored. After 45 minutes we went to the reception desk to ask what was happening. After some investigation, it turned out our order had never been place due to "a new system." We were given a $50 gift card and an apology and just drove home. We decided to return on our anniversary in June and made a reservation on Open Table. After a long drive, we got there and there were small menus on the table with limited selections and nothing for vegetarians. Upon asking, we were informed that a chef had not shown up so that was the menu for the day! They could have called or texted us! At that point, we could not get a reservation at another restaurant until hours later. It totally ruined the day for us. I just called to see if I could speak with someone, and the phone goes directly to voicemail with no identification of who I reached. We are stuck with a gift card we don't want to use, two hours wasted sitting in the restaurant and driving back and forth to it, and a ruined anniversary dinner.

Deep fried artichokes

I took my mom here for Mother’s Day, we made an early reservation before it got busy. We got seated right away and then waited about 15 minutes for someone to come to the table to get our drink order but we figured maybe the staff was still coming on shift. Once our server came she brought out chips and hummus, it was very good with lemon and garlic flavor. I got steak medallions with mashed potatoes and it was so good melt in your mouth and the wine sauce on it was so good. My mom got halibut and risotto and loved it. We also got deep fried artichokes and they were delicious. Overall it was a good experience and I would come back for happy hour food!

Wonderful celebration ruined by this restaurant.

Our small party of six was taken upstairs to a baron room that one reviewer described as storage space. The table was not set. We requested cutlery which was dumped in the middle of the table for us (the guests) to divide among us. We ordered cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desert. After 20 to 30 minutes a few of the appetizers appeared. The rest straggled in sporadically Afterwards, our cocktails arrived in the same fashion. We told our waiter that cocktails should be served first He said it was busy so he had to make the drinks.One appetizer was described as artichoke hearts with truffles. There was one heart on a ceramic of dip. Two of us ordered the steak special as entrees. It was supposed to be topped with blue cheese .One diner declined the topping and requested it plain. No entrees were served at the same time. The steaks came out last, both topped by a yellow sauce. They ran out of blue cheese so (without informing us they substituted). Desserts are fabulous here. I could go on but you get the point. Our waiter was completely incompetent but pleasant. We left a generous tip in spite of feeling our special occasion was ruined. We also said nothing to management since we didn't ant to cause further misery to the occasion. Our guest of honor had suggested the restaurant..I cannot even imagine so many wonderful reviews. Maybe management watches over the downstairs and hopefully the bartenders make their drinks.
