in town sightseeing in lovely central Oregon. Stayed a few days in Prairie rather than John Day (been there done that), we wanted some small town charm. Went yesterday for coffee and was served by the “manager” who was very friendly, helpful and respectful of us wearing masks. Today was considerably different. This server was curt, served my wife a coffee that was dripping down the side of her cup and she made no effort to clean it up or offer a napkin. No courtesy, no conversation from her. This coffee shop has some charm with nice gifts and is the only coffee shop in this small town (other than a fast food place) but our experience was horrible. There is a sign that masks are REQUIRED but no one here abides by that. Dont expect that when eating, but there is disdain and staring at us bc we did have masks. In short, if you want a good cup of coffee, other than the restaurants which were closed today, go but this owner lacks basic courtesy for visitors.
Coffee and service are good, and I very much appreciate that they returned my credit card I left behind via snail mail. Years ago we once stayed at their school house rental, which was fantastic. I'd give them five stars if the unmasked staff treated COVID seriously - one of my closest friends since highschool died last March. In three weeks this volleyball coach died after contracting the virus. His Mom died the same day.
Prairie City is small, but nice. This coffee shop was the locals place as I waited to meet a friend to backpack in the Strawberry Wilderness. Good chai, friendly, comfy. Overheard plans for the football game that evening, real Americana. Also has quirky selection of gifts.
The coffee shop is a lovely pit stop with a range of very nice gifts in addition to the coffee shop. The iced chocolate and latte we bought was well made and perfect for a hot August day. Staff were friendly.
Judy was the best! There are wonderful gifts to purchase, a wine and beer bar and of course the perfect coffee.
