About Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Tucked between Reed College and the gentle curves of Crystal Springs Creek, this seven-acre urban oasis is a floral paradise hidden within Portland’s southeast neighborhoods. Originally a test garden for rhododendron enthusiasts in the 1950s, it has blossomed into a beloved public garden showcasing thousands of rhododendrons, azaleas, and companion plants that burst into color each spring.

Meandering paths and wooden bridges wind through landscaped gardens, tranquil ponds, and waterfalls, creating a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers — more than 90 species of birds have been spotted here.

Visitors can relax on shaded benches, picnic on the lawn, or simply stroll the looping footpaths to admire blooms reflected in the garden’s glassy waterways. With seasonal plant sales, special events, and peak blooms from late March through May, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a living canvas of color and calm at the city’s edge.

    Vibrant colors abound!

The Gardens never disappoint with the vibrant colors, the remarkable older rhododendron that are now trees, and the wildlife. We came down to witness the babies: the duckings. We wanted to find some goslings but never did see those. However we saw plenty of nutria! Those are are surely a strange looking animal, I believe from the family of the weasel.

    Phenomenal Garden

This is possibly the prettiest garden in the city, at least that we visited, right up there with The Grotto. Entry price can be a little steep, but it's a large enough garden that I found it worth it. Great lake view, lots of places to sit in nature.

Well Behaved Kids NOT Welcome; Rude Staff

Very rude to families with children. My 6 year old was NOT off the path, not in the water, just high spirited and enjoying being outside. Staff there were extremely hostile and condescending. Felt like a lot of assumptions were being made. Kids are not welcome in this place. Try Leach Botanical Garden instead...they are very welcoming and kind.

    A hidden gem!

What a treasure! The garden was in full bloom and we couldn't stop taking pictures. So many different colors. A nice easy walk along the beautiful paths and bridges. Loved it.
