Historic charm, but badly in need of updates!
We stayed at The Benson last Saturday and booked two rooms. As frequent travelers (Hilton Diamond and Bonvoy Platinum Elite), we were looking forward to experiencing a classic Portland hotel with old‑school charm. Unfortunately, the stay didn’t live up to expectations. Our king room was fine, but our daughter’s queen room was a major disappointment. The mattresses felt extremely old — genuinely like sleeping on a sack of rocks — and well past their usable life. For a hotel that markets itself as a historic luxury property, the lack of updated bedding was surprising. The TV setup was also outdated, offering only limited satellite channels. Most hotels, even older ones, have modernized their in‑room entertainment, but The Benson hasn’t kept pace. Service felt understaffed throughout the stay. We waited 15 minutes for a valet to appear at check‑in, and there was no sense of urgency or apology. It set the tone for the rest of the visit. The one bright spot was the bartender in the lobby bar. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about bourbon — easily the highlight of our stay. Overall, The Benson has great bones and plenty of history, but it desperately needs updated rooms, better mattresses, modern amenities, and stronger staffing. Until those improvements are made, it’s hard to recommend, especially for travelers accustomed to higher‑tier hotel experiences.

Lovely hotel with excellent staff
What a wonderful stay in Portland! From Will at check-in, Richard for dining, and Sofia at check-out, we had a first-class experience. Since this was our first time in Portland, The Benson was ideally located for city exploration. Thank you to everyone who made this visit special.

Fantastic Customer Service, Great Location
We stayed at The Benson and chose this area so we could explore downtown Portland. Fantastic location, so many places to shop and eat within walking distance. Everyone single staff person was incredibly helpful and kind. The beds are very soft, too soft for me with prior back issues. I didn't realize the softness of the beds until we returned late evening. I reached out in the Hilton app explaining the situation and asked if they had a roll away bed. Will responded and said they found one and would have it taken up to the room. Within 30-40 minutes, 2 gentleman arrived with the rollaway bed, extra warm sheets, blankets and an extra pillow. One gentleman rolled the bed in, and we problem -solved the issue with space. He was friendly, understanding and wished everyone a good night before departing. This team went above and beyond and saved me from back issues the next morning. The next day our Uber driver was confused about the pick up spot and the 2 gentleman at Valet helped me understand the Uber driver was parked too far off to walk and gave me the hotel address and encouraged me to message the Uber driver and tell him to pick us in front of the hotel. Truly, every staff member we had an interaction with from the moment we arrived until we left was so helpful. Definitely book your stay at The Benson.

Fire Alarm
The fire alarm sounded, we went to the hall, someone on the intercom said something that didn't make sense on the line of they were still investigating. We waited about five minutes and decided to follow the evacuation plan on the door. We went down ten (10) flights and was told nothing when we got to the lobby from the outside. I am a retired education administrator and am familiar with fire alarms in schools. My husband and I are both 88 years old and infirm. We can still walk carefully but I have severe scoliosis as a result of Polio and two hip replacements. I became very, very sore and could hardly walk over the next two days. I am still very sore. My husband has trouble breathing and has very sore knees and back. He also has suffered a lot of pain. We are extremely disappointed in an issue that was handled very poorly.
