Nice old hotel
I stayed here for two nights as I was attending a conference on Tomahawk Island. Safety and close to Powell's were the two important points and, after checking with friends, I chose the Benson. I am a Diamond HHonors member so got a room upgrade but as work booked the hotel through a different site I didn't get the $15 food credit or points. Check-in was professional without being friendly. The room was very nice - spacious and the usual supercomfy bed and pillows. As it's an old hotel the windows do open. There was a bit of street noise at night but not enough to keep me awake. There wasn't much of a view but I was only there to sleep. Two things need improvement - the blockout curtains don't go the whole way and the tap in the sink is far too short, meaning that waters spills onto the floor. The doorman told me the best (safest) way to Powell's. It was a quick 5-minute walk. Downtown Portland is a sad sight - so many shops are boarded up and the sight of multiple armed guards in Target and Nordtrom Rack was quite confronting. I felt completely safe walking around Portland at night. There were lots of homeless people but I never felt unsafe. A few of them were friendly which was nice.
A friendly welcome
We went to the Benson during the powercuts and couldn’t have felt more relieved. Clarissa made us feel safe and comfortable. Lovely hotel. Clarissa was very accommodating and flexible with our booking. The room was lovely and the room service food was great.
Our stay at Portland’s Grande Dame - The Benson
We had the most wonderful anniversary staycation at the Benson. The hotel is so beautiful and truly feels like the Grande Dame of Portland. The morning we left we had the treat of meeting Bobby in the restaurant and he truly helped make us feel like we were VIPs. Thank you to everyone at the Benson.
Beautiful hotel, good location, tasty breakfast
The hotel is very beautiful. The lobby has stunning historic interior, but the rooms are modern chic. The hotel staff is very friendly, especially Bobby from the restaurant. It was our first time in Portland and he gave us a lot of recommendations. The breakfast here is very good, we especially loved the Oregon Omelette with foraged mushrooms and local cheese. The hotel is in walking distance from a lot of downtown attractions and there are many good food options around. Overall, a great experience 👍🏼
My sister and I had to move my 90 year old parents to this hotel during a recent ice storm. The emoyees could not have been nicer. John Louie, Kathryn, Cassandra? think her name was? They were all great in accomodating the four of us when we were going through a stressful time. Thank you! PS: I want one of those mattresses too. : )
