Expect to be delighted at The Oak Street Hotel. The hotel is a handsomely renovated, 1909 classic beauty converted into nine rooms with private baths. Located on the quiet edge of downtown HoodRiver in the heart of the Columbia Gorge.

I booked a room at the last minutes just before the Memorial Day weekend and this room was available. It was advertised as a wheelchair accessible room. Although the price seemed a little high it was available and in the heart of town, so I made the reservation. Upon arrival I searched for the room and was dismayed to see that it is in the daylighted basement of the building and is tucked into the "alley" between two buildings. OK, no problem. Upon unlocking the door you enter a service foyer (don't know what else to call it) with two doors. One door was the room and the second was the boiler room which was also used for storage. Still, no big deal. Upon entering the room... well all allusions of grandeur went out the door. The room is tiny, the ceiling is very low (7'?) with air ducts and pipes running across it, and there was no closet, wardrobe or any place to hang clothes. Well, to be truthful there were two hangers sitting on nails in the wall. The window was tiny so the room was dark enough to sleep in during the day. Did I mention that the room was tiny? But to make matters worse 1/2 of the room is bathroom. You enter the bathroom to pass through into the sleeping area. There is no wall or separation between the sleeping area and the bathroom. You will see, hear and smell everything that anyone who might be with you performs. But the biggest problem is the shower. It's a wheelchair accessible shower so there is no lip or gutter to the shower. So when you shower you end up soaking the entire bathroom. And as this was in May 2021 with Covid rules still in effect (?) there was no maid service. So although you use every available towel to soak up the water the room stays wet from then on. But there's more: There's a drain in the middle of the bathroom floor. Great. Except that a few minutes after taking your shower all sorts of interesting critters that come crawling up out of that drain. I'm not an entomologist but these things were big, ugly and nasty-looking. So other than all that the room was great. And despite advertising as a wheelchair accessible room there is no wheelchair access. There are six steps up from the gravel parking lot. Definitely not worth what they charged me for the room. My advise is if there's not a another room available in Hood River drive to Cascade Locks or The Dalles. So what's the problem? Besides being tiny
Caution to any guest whom books with Oak Street!! I booked a stay at an Oak Street managed property in early January for a stay in August. A month later I received an email from the property saying “ As you know, you currently have a reservation for our 310 Oak Street property from August 3rd through August 12th that you booked through VRBO Homeaway. You thought it was too good to be true? Well unfortunately it is. There has been a glitch in the system with our Homeaway account that has caused our property rates to be lower than they should be. This homeaway glitch has caused you to pay for the Luxe Loft at the winter rate when really it should have been booked under its summer rate.. The nightly rate that you paid at $188 is the lowest offering during our slow season and since your reservation falls in our high traffic season, we have no other choice then to change those rates to the appropriate amount which is a nightly rate of $295.“ Perhaps I’m old fashioned, but this communication style, along with a lack of acceptable alternatives, is egregious. If I were in their shoes I’d have taken the hit in my property management fee and covered the difference. It’s old fashioned integrity that’s missing here and it’s a shame. I pointed out that I booked a long way out because Hood River properties get booked up quickly, and that I’ve now missed out on deals that were equal to the “erroneous” one they initially sold me. Also that I gave an interest free loan of over $2,000 to them. Didn’t seem okay to me. They told me I could either pay the additional $978 (!!!) they under priced by, stay in another location (nowhere near as nice) or, get this, find a friend to split the cost with to make it more affordable! I get mistakes happen, but you need to own up to it and pay for your mistakes. If it was an hour or even a week after initially booking, it would have been different. But now I’m at a financial disadvantage because of an error Oak Street made and they could care less. The only silver lining is that I won’t be staying at a property manager by individuals with such a lack of integrity.
We stayed here for our Anniversary and loved the fall decorations, like a Hallmark movie, and enjoyed the sweet breakfast served however our room was clean but strange. It was I believe a handicap room but they were not booked fully so not sure why we were in a room with a toilet three feet from the bed with only a curtain to separate it. Not sure if other rooms are like this also. Not sure for the price I would stay there again.
At the price point charged, services offered were not commensurate with what was received. Room on second floor had no WiFi capability-only captured signal from lobby. We would have had better signal up the block at the hostel! We checked in Friday PM for the weekend and had no maid service for entire period. Parking was limited and hard to find after 4PM.
This was our first time at this location having stayed a number of times at another downtown hotel. We had a Friday and Saturday night. The rooms are modest but very well kept. Clean, and you can tell the owners put their heart into making a neat old house into an Inn. The room was nicely appointed with plenty of light and a little fridge. Room for all our stuff and all we needed for a good night's sleep and freshening up. Not fancy but charming, very clean, and comfortable. The front patio and porch are charming. It's right on Oak so there are cars and trucks going by at a pretty good rate at times....but other times it was not noticeable. Breakfast on the porch and the patio was wonderful. Beautiful space and well cared for. We enjoyed the porch in the late evening to wind down. Super convenient to do most of HR on foot and convenient parking. We only used our car one time. Breakfast was outstanding. Outstanding. Fresh, original. Homemade. The staff were exceptionally nice and service oriented. We felt welcomed but not overwhelmed or hovered upon. We had the 9:30 breakfast slot and while others did too, there was so many places to spread out inside and out it felt really private and special. We were part of something...but on our own to enjoy as we wished.
