Hotel Sylvia is a boutique destination for book lovers on the Oregon Coast. This iconic property (c. 1910) has operated for more than forty years as a quiet literary retreat. The hotel is named after the legendary 20th century bookseller and publisher Sylvia Beach. After purchasing the hotel in 2024, VIP Hospitality completed a full renovation in 2025 to preserve its legacy for decades to come. Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the hotel’s breakfast café, lobby, and most guestrooms boast stunning views of the coast. A dedication to literary culture is felt in details throughout, including original artwork and bookshelves in every room. Each of the 22 guest rooms has a literary theme: seven are dedicated to specific authors, and the others are tastefully decorated with a literary genre (Drama, Fantasy, Historical, Literary Non-Fiction, Mystery, and Romance). The top floor of the hotel houses the James Joyce Library, a quiet attic space to read and write.

Hotel Sylvia is an Oregon Coast Gem!💎
We loved our stay during the long President’s Day weekend. Hotel Sylvia is cozy and quiet with plenty of comfortable spaces to read, put together puzzles, and write. There are also beautiful views of the beach, warm blankets you can borrow, and a fireplace with hundreds of books in every nook and cranny around the hotel to borrow and even buy. The unlimited complimentary espresso drinks were a huge plus and the amount of exploring and great food spots in the area really was the cherry on top. We loved our stay and the kind staff at Hotel Sylvia (shout out to Alex who went above and beyond to answer questions for guests), we are already looking forward to our next visit!

Hotel Sylvia in Newport Oregon saved our 42nd anniversary trip
My wife I booked a couple of nights at a hotel in Depoe Bay Oregon. We were celebrating our 42nd anniversary and had stayed at that motel around 10 years ago. Unfortunately the place now was run down and absolutely filthy. We ended up just staying there one night and drove down to Nye beach in Newport Oregon. We decided to just drive by all the motels in Nye beach and just choose one based on their appearance and location. We drove all around town and looked at about 5 motels but when we looked at Hotel Sylvia we both said at the same time " That’s it” we quickly got online and booked a room for the night. We were so impressed when we walked into the check-in area. Everything was just perfect. This hotel is extremely well maintained and has a fantastic vibe. The staff was so kind and helpful. We checked in a few hours early just to make sure everything was good with our reservation and the room was still being cleaned so we just walked to a restaurant (Chowder Bowl) and had lunch. Not long after we finished lunch the staff sent us a text letting us know our room was ready. Our room was perfect! It was on the third floor and had a view of the ocean and part of downtown Nye beach. The room was very modern and so clean. For my wife and I the room was a perfect 10 and the staff even left us a anniversary card with a touching little note! We definitely found our beautiful place to stay everytime we go to the Oregon coast!

Beautiful location in Nye Beach
Having found Nye Beach a few months back, we made plans to stay two nights and explore further. Wanting to be near the core, found the Hotel Sylvia. Located on a bluff just above town, easy walking to the core area and beach. Price was reasonable. Looks like the hotel was sold sometime recently and remodeled/updated. Original beach house, it uses a literary theme. Remodel kept all the original charm. Room was smallish (knew that going in) but fine for the two of us. Clean & comfortable. Bed was cozy, small sitting area. Great views of the beach. The folks working here are exceptionally nice, always ackowledging you on your way in/out. There is a cafe open for breakfast and an espresso bar in the lobby (we did not try either). Note: This hotel does not have TVs/refrigerators in the room. Excellent wifi if you need to stream something on your own device.

New and updated but just as unique and remarkable as ever!
As always, I loved our stay at Hotel Sylvia. This was the first time I've stayed since the remodel and was afraid that I would miss the quirky, charming rooms. Not at all! I love that there are now many rooms with king beds to choose from, all updated and still charming but now very classy. We stayed in the Jane Austen room, which used to be the Ken Kesey room. The king bed with positioned so that we could watch the sunset over the ocean and see the morning sun crawl toward us across waves and sand at sunrise. The breakfast room has some of the best views in the hotel and the food was perfect. There was something for everyone on the menu. The free espresso drinks was a lovely perk for overnight guests. The James Joyce library was a huge improvement for that attic space. Around 4:30, we set out to walk to Local Ocean for dinner and enjoyed the entire sunset and post sunset glow before turning toward the bayfront. Magnificent! If I were to make one change, I would ask for 100% cotton or linen sheets. Microfiber sheets creep me out when they spark in the dark.
