Best in the area
Enjoyable little gem in quiet Prairie City. The history of the restored building was pretty neat, and service was friendly. We stayed in one of the larger rooms and it was clean, simple, and reasonably nice. We also enjoyed the mountain views from our windows, and the furnished kitchenette. This isn't quite a boutique hotel, so don't go in expecting that... but it's a lot better than it has any right to be, being in such a small town that's perfectly pleasant but - let's face it - not brimming with tourist traffic. In fact, if you arrive on a Monday evening, like we did, consider yourself lucky to find a restaurant or grocery store that's open (in other words - come prepared!). Still, we enjoyed our stay. I wish every town had a place like this!
We stayed here to visit the John Day Fossil Beds and Strawberry wilderness. They have done a wonderful job remodeling the hotel and we enjoyed hanging out in the lobby in the evenings. There some kitchen space available so we used that to prepare easy breakfasts. We were there in November, but their patio looks like it would be fun to enjoy in the summer months. Staff service was excellent.
Always talked of staying here. So glad we did. Restful. Classy. Great service. Don’t miss it. comfortable room. The bed was most comfortable and I sunk right into it .The kitchen made it easy to fix food and be comfortable. Just like home
Small comfortable hotel
We recently stayed at the Hotel Prairie for 2 nights as part of our road trip through Central and Eastern Oregon. Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet. The staff were friendly, and informative. I enjoyed being able to get a cold beer after a long day of hiking! Prairie City is a great location if you want to hike in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness- which we did, or visit other areas or historic sites like the Kam Wah Chung in John Day. It is adjacent to several restaurants, including Chuck's Little Diner- the go-to breakfast place for the town apparently- where on our first morning a guy insisted on getting up from his table so we wouldn't have to sit at the bar. We would definitely stay there again, and highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice accommodations in the area.
Comfortable old hotel
The building is reasonably charming and staff helpful. Our room was clean, if a little small, and the bathroom excellent. The lounge area is a lovely place to sit. There is an overall air of some character missing though despite the history.
