Coos Bay Stay - DO NOT STAY
The Choice Hotel located at 275 E. Johnson Avenue in Coos Bay Oregon is listed as an Ascent Hotel chain. This so called Ascent Hotel is no more than an Econo Lodge. It used to be the old Edgewater Motel. The wiring is so old that they had to remove the microwaves from the rooms. When Choice Hotel bought the property they removed the on-site restaurant. There is not even an option now for a continental breakfast. None of the exterior doors lock. This property faces a Safeway on one side and a slough on the other. Being Oregon both sides are prone to homeless encampments. It was not safe to walk down the boardwalk at night on the slough side. The ice machines are located on the slough side with back stair cases leading down to them. At night all of the lighting in those back stair cases were burnt out. The TV stopped working on the 3rd afternoon. After a call to the front desk he was unable to come up to the room and fix it due to the fact he was the only person on site and could not leave the front desk. The curtains were not wide enough for the window letting in parking lot lighting. For the nightly price we paid for this property I would certainly not rate it an Ascent Hotel and certainly cannot recommend it to anyone.

Nice location and rooms
This is a newly renovated hotel, so the rooms and lobby area felt very fresh and clean. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The description of the of the hotel stated there was continental breakfast available; however, there was not. They did have a coffee machine in the lobby. The room had a mini-refrigerator, but no microwave. There was a microwave in the lobby for all to use. I felt this was a bit strange. When I asked the young man at the front desk about this he said it was against code to have microwaves in the rooms. Really? Every hotel up and down the coast, budget or not had microwaves in the rooms. In the lot next door was a Safeway and across the street, I believe was a Fred Mayer. I enjoyed the location on the river.

Nice room
When we drove up, the exterior is dated, so we were a bit scared of our choice. Loved the King bed and spacious room. Also loved the patio area and view of the flowers and water. Very disappointed that there was no microwave in the room. There is only microwave in the lobby. Since Covid I really don’t care to share a microwave with all other guests. I felt the price was good, the room was better quality than more expensive places we stayed at along the coast.

Good for one night stay
The recent renovations made this place nice and clean. The WiFi is solid, showers are steaming hot and beds are comfortable. Our only gripes are the lack of elevators, no more breakfast and the view of that slough, outside our balcony. For our price point of $124/night, we got two Queen beds and two great Concierge suggestions for places to eat: 7 Devils Brewery and Seacoast Gardens Cafe, in nearby Charleston.

Slough view, NOT BAY VIEW
1)Edge of a slough, NOT on Coos Bay! 2)Hotel is clean. 3)Gym not open til 7am, bc next to a bedroom-so no run til 9am Central time if you are traveling from miJack's. 4) No breakfast. I called ahead, asked if on bay w view of bay. Wilful misrepresentation- was told " it's on the water". If you want to be on Bay go to Best Western. If want to be by boats go to Capn Jacks in Charleston 10 minutes away.
