East Lake Campground

About East Lake Campground

East Lake Campground sits at the edge of beautiful East Lake in the caldera of Newberry Volcano. Most sites in this campground are on the lake or no more than a few minutes walk away. There are opportunities for bird watching, bicycling, sightseeing, and canoeing. East Lake is a little shadier than the other lakes and is a perfect way to beat the heat of the summer. There are nearby hikes into the lava rock and close by waterfalls. The area is part of the Newberry National Monument in Deschutes National Forest. The area is popular for its geological significance and multitude of recreational activities, making it an ideal individual and family camping excursion.

From Bend, OR: Travel 23.5 miles south on Highway 97, then 16.6 miles east on Paulina Lake Road (County Road 21).

From LaPine travel 6.8 miles north on Hwy 97, then 16.6 miles east on County Road 21 (Paulina Lake Road).

East Lake + Camping + In A Landscape + Kayaking

We camped at East Lake Campground for two nights. The sites are fairly large, but not very many trees to make them private. Some sites have beautiful lake views. Ours was a partial view. We had nice weather but the overnight low was cold! You can walk to the resort. It is a one mile walk, so two miles roundtrip back to the campground. There is a shoreline trail. We went to the East Lake Resort and had some draft beers and a snack. Very good! We also attended the Hunter Noack "In a Landscape" classical piano music concert. It was right on the water and it was fantastic. Stereo headphones are handed out as you arrive, sit anywhere and listen! It was a great experience. There is a boat launch for our kayaks. The water level did not come up to the concrete so it was very muddy launching.

Annual Experience

We go every year in early July. Our fly fishing group has its annual outing here, The Lake is beautiful and the fishing is good. It can be windy in the afternoons but always a fun place to be. Two rustic resorts and three or four boat launching sites. Its a National Park so remember your Pass.

East lake is inside the Newberry Caldera in the national Monument. It was very busy with a lot going on in a small area. There is a small motel they call a resort. There is a boat ramp and activities on the lake. People everywhere. Pretty lake.

Fabulous family time

Fantastic for a simple vacation! Clean, older cabins came well equipped. Staff was friendly and energetic. No internet or phone service which was wonderful! Fishing was excellent.........grandkids caught 18 inchers off the shore with worms!

Bugs, Bats and Burgers

The water was full of seaweed. There was an overwelming stench of sewer water. Rented a boat for fishing.. That was fun until they told us not to actually consume the fish due to mercury levels. Cabins are outdated. no screens on windows. swarms of bugs, bats divebombing your head every evening. Our two story cabin was unbearable in the evening (all the kids sleept downstiars in sleeping bags.) woke up to to a disgusting layer of bugs covering every possible surface. All in all, lake water not swimmable, food is mediocre, cabins need a LOT of work. Please just at least keep the bugs and the bats out.
