A priceless American West experience! Refreshing, relaxing, inspiring, and fun!
Our stay with Wilson Ranches Retreat, near Fossil, Oregon, was delightful and refreshing! The experience far exceeded our expectations, leaving us with many happy memories and wishing to return again (and we found that many other guests are regular visitors). The views on the ranch (and from the windows) were breathtaking—vast, rugged hills, and a huge sky—so much room to breathe, and precious quiet and solitude. The bedrooms and bathrooms were lovely, clean, and comfortable, and the atmosphere of the ranch was warm, welcoming, slow-paced, and relaxing. We stayed three nights and found ourselves looking forward to the absolutely delicious ranch-style breakfast each morning (optional). Served at 8:00 am on the main level of the home with the other guests and often the host joining us at the table, the breakfasts were comfortable and always included laughter and interesting, entertaining conversation. Not enough good things can be said of Kara and Brian, our hosts at Wilson Ranches Retreat. Both are just lovely, amazing people, warm, friendly, and genuinely caring. We felt like we belonged on the ranch – welcomed like part of the family!
And the horseback riding! Yes, do take a horseback ride. Our two teen girls went on the half-day cattle drive, and just loved it—free range, roaming the beautiful hills, and gathering together stray cows and calves. (They are fit, experienced horsewomen, and half a day on the range tired them out. But the guide will work with you, and the duration of the ride can be flexible to suit the needs.)
There is plenty to do and see around Fossil, and you will want to stay several days to visit everything. We explored the fossil digging site behind the Fossil High School, attended part of a Bluegrass music festival, and drove through the truly amazing Painted Hills! There were other sights and destinations we wanted to visit but didn’t have enough time to explore.
We highly recommend Wilson Ranches Retreat as a relaxing and wholesome getaway! It is a priceless American West experience — like stepping into history (while still enjoying all the modern conveniences). You will likely become a returning guest.
