Looking for a good wine tour outside of Eugene. Any thoughts?

If you’re looking for a guide/driver check with Ralph at Grape Escape out of Portland. or Byron who is based in Eugene at Grand Cru Wine Tours. I’ve met both of them when I worked in a tasting room myself, and would highly recommend them.

How did Grants Pass get its name? I’ve heard several different versions.

The name, according to the City of Grants Pass, was selected to honor General U.S. Grant’s success at Vicksburg and a post office was established in 1865. Until after the turn of the century the name still retained the original spelling of Grant’s Pass, using an apostrophe. For more on the area’s history check out…

I will be visiting Oregon on a budget and plan on spending about 4 days in southern Oregon and then up to Portland where I will be traveling from Seaside down the coast to Bandon. Do you have any ideas for lower cost cabins, hostels or places to stay overnight?

If you want to spend time in Ashland, your best bet is Ashland Hostel, which has dorm rooms for less than $30 per night. See this link. On the other end of the Rogue Valley, Valley of the Rogue State Park just north of Gold Hill is one of the nicest state parks, where you…

Biking from Dalles to Portland. Where is a good in between B&B or inn?

Here is a great website with some other lodging options in the Hood River area.

I’ll be traveling the western side of the state from North to South in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions on spots/things to do?

I see on your site that you have already visited the historic highway through the Gorge, but it would merit a visit again, and the fall colors should be reaching peak color around the time or your visit. You may also be interested in the Hood River Fruit Loop as your timing will put you…

Where’s the best cycling trails in Portland or surrounding? I want a 30-40 mile-ish ride with pretty views!

There are tons of great rides in the Columbia Gorge, 60 miles from Portland. There are no mountain bike trails of that length in PDX itself, but Forest Park has fireroad riding and very limited singletrack.

What are the MUST things to see/do in Portland around July/August?

The Oregon Brew Fest (in July) for one thing! Several street fairs & take place in July/Aug too, also Sunday Parkways . If you like sports, don’t miss a chance to see the Timbers (our soccer team) play at home!

Planning a trip through the west coast. From Portland to San Francisco. What we must not miss?

I’d check out Astoria and Canon Beach, see this blog entry. I would take I-5 to Hwy 38 to the coast and down to San Francisco.

We are traveling to Central Oregon in early September from Scotland. We like Country and Western music and traditional jazz – and would like to know if there is a special site to go looking for places.

I am so pleased you’ll be visiting our amazing state. And September is the very best month to do so, in my humble opinion. Here in Central Oregon the skies are a bit clearer and warmer than the rest of the state. And while it can be tricky to find this regions’ roots buried under…

Does anyone make good ice wine in Oregon?

It’s typically too warm in Oregon, but there are producers with excellent late harvest/dessert wines. Try Trisaetum or Seven of Hearts Wine Here’s an article I wrote last year about Oregon dessert wines with other recommendations. Enjoy!

Ideas for events or places to visit in Portland, Oregon with an almost two-year-old child in the spring?

Lots of family friendly events in Portland, check out Around the Sun, & my site.

Planning a trip to Portland, Oregon this summer. Any suggestion on things to do, places to stay? I’ve never been and I’m from the East Coast.

In my research on Oregon, over the last couple of years; I came across a story about one of the coastal sites, setting out glass globes…hiding them like easter eggs. Where does this take place, or does it anymore?

You’re definitely thinking of Lincoln City, where they set out more than 2,000 colorful blown glass “floats” between October and May. The program began in 1999, to celebrate the millennium, and now the “Float Fairies” are at work every year. The floats are modeled on the traditional Japanese blown glass fishing floats, in green and…

What’s your favorite place to drink/buy wine in Portland?

I’m a big fan of Liner & Elsen Wines shop in Northwest Portland

What do they have to do in Whitney, Oregon?

If you’re looking to visit ghost towns like Whitney, Eastern Oregon’s the place.

Best snowshoeing in Central Oregon? We need to work off the big ol’ dinner we’re gonna eat at Cowboy Dinner Tree over New Years.

There are some amazing trails in Central Oregon Two questions: 1. Where in Central Oregon will you be staying? 2. Over ten miles round trip or under? FYI I am Asit Rathod aka President of Powder for Ask Oregon. Born and raised here in Oregon and love snow!

You can help me? I’m interested in Snowboard camps in Oregon.

There a few world famous snowboard camps and resorts here in Oregon. Mt. Hood Meadows has some great snowboard camps, depending on when you’re coming out.

We are recent transplants from California to the beautiful Umpqua Valley. My wife and I enjoy hunting and fishing. When is the best time to fish for winter steelhead and salmon in the Southern Umpqua River?

I’m not too familiar with fishing the Umpqua. I’ve personally only fished it for smallmouth bass. But, as a general rule winter steelhead will be picking up in January and last through March. The salmon fishing will be winding down about now.

Any suggestions on what I should stop and get pics of enroute to LaPine? What is great that direction this time of year?

Smith Rock is stunning, as are Dillon&Benham Falls on the Deschutes. Detour up Century Drive to view the snowy Cascades! Bend’s Drake Park is lovely this time of year. Trees with fall foliage by the river. Good excuse to grab lunch downtown, too.

My husband and I are planning to move to Oregon toward the end of next year. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what cities/towns are with in commuting distance of the Portland area?

Commuting distance is relative, of course. Much of close-in Portland is actually quite residential, so you could consider that. Nearby suburbs include Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, etc. Like Rogue Ales says, traffic can be bear – but it really depends on your own tolerance for it. The Portland area has…
