Take a Car-Free Road Trip Across Oregon

Sponsored
December 18, 2024
Visitors and locals alike rely on the POINT’s four routes for work and play, and it’s easy to see why. Each bus comes with comfortable seating, ample luggage space, Wi-Fi, restrooms and USB ports at every seat — and many connect with Amtrak trains and local public transit to make car-free trips smoother than ever. In winter especially, mountain snow makes for great skiing and snowboarding but occasionally uneasy driving, and you’ll get to rest easy while letting someone else take the wheel. More

Celebrate Oregon’s State Tree, the Douglas Fir

December 9, 2024
The Douglas fir — regal in any context — is the star of the newly reimagined Portland Airport. Its arched, khaki-colored slats perch high above the concourse floor, designed as a fittingly grand tribute to Oregon’s official state tree. Here’s what makes the Douglas fir so special, where to see it on your travels and how Oregon’s signature tree is now an intimate part of Portland’s airport. More

How to Spend a Day Exploring Portland’s Washington Park

September 17, 2024
Imagine spending your day surrounded by groves of trees from around the world, basking in the peacefulness of a Japanese garden or watching chimpanzees groom, forage and socialize. Now imagine enjoying those memorable experiences all in one day. You can find it all at Washington Park, which occupies more than 400 acres just west of downtown Portland in the city’s West Hills.  Your best bet for getting to Washington Park is to take TriMet’s MAX Light Rail Service, whose red and blue lines serve the park... How to Watch Elk Along the Oregon Coast

September 3, 2024
Every autumn, as temperatures cool and leaves turn across Oregon, elk — Oregon’s largest land animal and the second-largest member of the deer family — undertake their annual mating ritual. The elk rut, as it’s known, is a weeks-long dance where bull elk unleash shrill bugle calls across open meadows and occasionally lock antlers with other worthy suitors to win over partners. More

Kayak and Zipline Adventures Near Crater Lake

May 17, 2024
I arrive at the forested headquarters of Crater Lake ZipLine, just outside Klamath Falls, shortly before 9 a.m. on a balmy summer morning. It’s the perfect day, in other words, for an outdoor adventure exploring Oregon’s Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, which contains the largest freshwater body in Oregon. I’m here for the guided Skyak outing, a seven-hour excursion that includes a kayak paddling tour of the quiet Upper Klamath Canoe Trail, lunch, then some adventurous fun with a sky-level zip-line ride.
