Capturing Oregon: Sunset on the Old McKenzie Highway

July 29, 2015
Living in Bend, one can easily take for granted the wonderful view of the Three Sisters Mountains to the west. As a photographer, I have had the pleasure of enjoying so many beautiful crimson-colored sunsets as the cloud layers build up over these jagged peaks that I rarely find myself choosing them as a subject… More

Sunrise on the Deschutes River

October 28, 2013
October along the Deschutes River is always a stunning — and even more so recently when I went there with a German photographer friend. Its always great when you can impress visitors with the scenic beauty here in Central Oregon. This morning turned out to be one of those moments you crave in nature photography. First… More

Sunset Over Mt. Bachelor

September 16, 2013
Nothing beats stormy weather when it comes to shooting sunsets. The clouds in the sky make for dramatic images. The sunlight gets filtered through them and the sky often lights up in a blaze of color around sunset or sunrise for that matter. We were having drinks with friends recently on my property in the… More

Capturing Oregon: Playing Cowboy

June 11, 2013
Here I am in the middle of a beautiful high altitude meadow, not far from the hamlet Fossil in Northeastern Oregon.  The sun is setting, and the yellowish light of the weakening sun lights hit the grass and the two riders in front of me. It is like a scene out of a Zane Grey… More

Capturing Oregon: Scott Lake Sunrise

May 8, 2013
There are many hidden treasures in Oregon. One of them is Scott Lake near McKenzie Pass west of the little town of Sisters. You can get great photos here of the Three Sisters Mountains across this beautiful little body of water. In the evening the sun hits the mountains just right. There are walk-in camping… More

Central Oregon Badlands Revisited

April 23, 2013
Some nights are better than others and some nights are pure magic. Central Oregon's Badlands Wilderness just east of Bend is a very special place to visit during full moon. It is a favorite with local Bendites and visitors alike. As a photographer, I am drawn to desert places and I love the solitude of… More

Capturing Oregon: Swampy Shelter

January 7, 2013
Sometimes you have to plan ahead to get the photo you want. I envisioned a photo of the Swampy Lakes Shelter at dusk with some pink sky behind it. Before heading out at around 2:00 p.m., I packed two Nikon SB800 Speedlights, each outfitted with a yellow gel. It is much easier to do this… More

Capturing Oregon: Birds of Summer

August 27, 2012
Summer in Central Oregon is a gorgeous time. In the courtyard of our house southeast of Bend, the lavender is in full bloom. The yellow flowers of the rabbit brush are starting to get pretty and the hummingbirds are all over the place. They fly in formations over our heads while we sip cappuccinos in… More

Capturing Oregon: Sparks Lake

July 2, 2012
If there is a iconic shot in Oregon, it is the view from the edge of Sparks Lake looking towards South Sister. The scenery here is simply stunning, and it always amazes me how few people come here for sunrise. The lake is about a 40-minute drive west of my home in Bend, Oregon. One… More
