Document your stay...bring extra shoes/slippers!
The owner seemed very kind and accommodating on the phone which added to the disappointment later. The word rustic may not a strong enough word for this place. It wasn't cleaned well before our arrival. Cobwebs were everywhere in the cabin, there were many spiders, flies, and even a hissing June Beetle we had to deal with inside. The dogs on the property would leave feces right outside our back door which my wife stepped in, The jacuzzi tub either hadn't been cleaned or hadn't been used for a long time. While we did use it, the jets spat out brown soap scum into the water (or what we hoped was soap scum)...we didn't stay in too long. Looking at the cobwebs overhead and having brown stuff floating in the water alters a mood. The cabin is separated from the main home by a bush, and the noise from their deck made it difficult to have our own conversations. The cabin has an uneven and rough concrete floor so bring slippers. There were other things which we actively had to avoid or ignore, but we decided to not let it distract from our time with each other. We were charged $100 after we left (without notice) for supposed damage which we didn't cause. The things he claimed were already in that condition, however, we did not have photo proof of the condition of the cabin when we arrived to prove otherwise. The owner was unresponsive when we tried to contact and come to terms. Thankfully our credit card stood behind us. To protect yourself, take pictures and document the condition of the place when you check-in. Also, watch your step anytime you step outside your door for the 'presents' the dogs leave. While we feel taken advantage of, our hope is our $100 is used to make this place nicer for the next guests. The river is indeed beautiful. We'd recommend High Country Expeditions for a fun day of rafting while you are there as the half-day trip was the highlight of our stay!!
WONDERFUL RELAXED VISIT
Looking for a casual getaway with a river running a few feet from your back door? Have a look at this place. It’s rustic - think of a family cabin- and for us, it was perfect. Ours was a spacious (immaculate) one room (plus bath) cabin with a comfy king mattress, sofa, coffee table, dining table and well equipped small kitchen. Outside, a private bistro table and shared picnic benches. The (friendly) family dogs may come to greet you; if you aren’t a dog person, look elsewhere. Currently, there are five cabins. Owner Bert deKlerk is a wealth of area information and quickly responds to queries. We look forward to a return visit!
CANCELLATION POLICY IS CROOKED
I had a very detailed conversation with Bert about the cancellation policy over the phone when reserving the cabins. It was 21 days prior and full refund, which is reasonable. Once he sends you the confirmation, he puts in the 10% office fee which was never discussed. I held it for 3 days, 3 months prior to the reservation and was charged 10% for cancelling. He never mentioned a 10% fee if you cancel and hold it for one day. It costs me $154 to hold it for 3 days. I have been in the travel industry for 25 years and have never heard of a 10% office fee. I understand if you want to charge 3% for the credit card fee, which would of been $37.00. This is crooked and when tried to discuss with him, he hung up the phone. I have discussed with many people and they are all shocked by this kind of fee. Do not reserve it for one minute if you think you might be cancelling and sounds like it is run down by the reviews.
No longer an inn, no longer cared-for
I guess this place was nice, once — maybe 20 or 30 years ago. Now it just seems old and rundown. We booked a cabin in an inn with a restaurant, and once we paid the deposit, were told the restaurant was closed. We were not offered any discount for this considerable inconvenience. (The nearest place for breakfast is 6 miles down the road, and the nearest place you'd actually want to eat is considerably further. Also very _very_ busy on weekend nights.) The cabin was not clean — dust, cobwebs, and insect carcasses littered every corner. The kitchen had no counter space & was not really usable for any meal more ambitious than a bowl of cereal. The furnishings are old and shabby and smell funny. Most windows don't really open, so you can't air it out, except by opening both doors wide & losing all privacy. The cabin cannot be made dark at night. The outdoor sprinkler system leaks into the kitchen, but nobody warns you not to put anything that can be damaged by water in that spot. (It's a BIG puddle you're stepping over to get to the sink.) The river is beautiful, and the smallish lawn alongside is nice, if weedy, but too small & public if all 3 cabins are full. (When our neighbor used his BBQ to cook supper, he filled our cabin with smoke!) The owners' dogs were confined all day and barked endlessly — plainly audible in our cabin, and outside. The whole place has an air of being no longer maintained. I wish we'd stayed elsewhere.
Perfect and Peaceful
We were out here for a wedding that was next door, and we were able to walk to it. Our room was the king fisher, the river is just a few foot steps away. Bert was extremely helpful and gave us some great recommendations. There wasn’t a hair dryer or iron in the room, but when asked for one Bert made them available to us. The wifi was pretty fast, there was a TV in the room as well but we didn’t use it. You have to call when you check in to let them know you are there, which was fine, we didn’t wait too long. Overall well worth the money and had a great first visit.
