TripAdvisor Ratings & Reviews
Stayed here for two nights while in the area for my friends' wedding. This is a beautiful hotel but it is also an older hotel. The hotel has an underground parking garage and also has lots of meeting rooms and a convention center. The lobby is beautiful and the staff was very courteous and professional. They also had cookies to welcome the guests. There is a restaurant in this hotel but I did not visit it, but it looked like a really nice place. They also had complimentary breakfast, but it was underwhelming as the breakfast selection was limited in my opinion, considering the nightly rate of the hotel. The first night I stayed in a king suite. It was large, had a seating area, along with a wet bar area that included a microwave, coffeemaker, and mini refrigerator. The decor was dated, but the room was clean. The bathroom was small in my opinion for a "suite" room. The second night I moved to a standard room with two queen beds. The decor was the same, dated, but the room was clean and also had a microwave and mini fridge and coffeemaker. The bathroom seemed to be the same size as in the suite room. Both rooms had large flat screen TVs and a desk area. The hotel is located within walking distance of several shops, eateries, and night spots; and is close to the carousel museum and some nature parks and walking trails. I'm giving them 4 stars based on location and because the rooms were clean and the staff were nice; due to the dated decor and the underwhelming breakfast I didnt give a full 5 stars.
Fantastic place for a wedding
I attended a wedding for my niece. All of our family stayed in the Grand Hotel. It was so comfortable and welcoming. The food was great, the hotel was comfortable and spacious. I highly recommend it. Salem is a great little city and The Grand Hotel is a gem of a hotel.
A very beautiful hotel in a lovely downtown area. I really enjoyed walking around looking at the architecture and a large park mere minutes away. I went to a music festival there, which was excellent and a perfect location for it. Wish I'd had more time to explore -- next time for sure! Very good breakfast and super-cool pancake maker.
Mixed Bag Left A Bad Impression
My husband and I stayed here 4 nights while moving our son into WU and attending opening week events. The good: Breakfast, Parking, Location, Price. All of the above services and amenities were a 5, with breakfast being a 4-but still very good. The bad: In-person customer service, WiFi I called the hotel at 2:30 PM on the day of our arrival to see if they had a room available, as we arrived a bit earlier than a typical check-in. I was told no rooms available and their check-in time is 5:00 PM. What?! Who has a 5:00 PM check-in? I looked over my reservation email and saw no check in times listed. I suggested an hour and was told they were placing customers in rooms as they became available. So, that was a no effort non-answer. We arrived at the hotel around 3:30 PM and was told a room was available, our reserved two queens. We brought up our many bags and boxes (due to dorm move-in) and then left for more college shopping and an early dinner. We later realized that the room was an accessible room, which isn’t what I booked. I inquired about switching rooms, and was told no without so much as a glance at their computers, or a “we could accommodate a move tomorrow or the next day”. Of course, all done with a smile, which isn’t a substitute for actual customer service. The WiFi was very spotty. My husband called the front desk to inquire and was told that they weren’t noticing any problems. Upon check out I was asked about the stay. I indicated the WiFi was bad, and was told that service was spotty due to the number of guests. So which is it? WiFi is fine or WiFi is spotty due to number of guests. Here’s the thing, The Grand Hotel, just be honest. When I checked in you should’ve told me that my room was accessible and then I could’ve made an informed decision. That was an example of poor customer service. If we call inquiring about WiFi, be honest that your service is challenged by a full house. Unfortunately, the bad irked me enough so that I probably won’t be back. What a shame, because I could’ve been (at least) a 4 year repeat customer. There’s better and more consistent value at other hotels in Salem. FYI, a polite smile without any effort isn’t customer service.
We stayed here as we could not get to Crater Lake due to the smokey fires. However we were not disappointed to be in Salem the capital of Oregon. At reception Samuel mentioned about going up the stairs st the Capitol. Thanks we did was amazing! Salem is lovely clean friendly. The hotel was charming breakfast was fine . I say this as husband has dairy allergy so he could not eat some most of hot stuff. They made him though hard boiled eggs thanks! The gym and pool were great! The laundry room super. The meal we ate was lovely. Loved that the parking was safe .highly recommend this hotel and all staff were nice!
