Overcharged
On 10/28/2023, we arrived in Coos Bay, Oregon, to celebrate our anniversary. We pulled into the Red Lion at 1313 N Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay, Oregon 97420. We arrived around 7:30 p.m. I walked into the lobby and was greeted by a younger blond male (no name tag). He asked if we had a reservation.
I said we did not. He rolled his eyes and, under his breath, asked what kind of room. I asked what was available, and as he looked it up on the computer, he said he had: single queen for $115.00 plus tax, single king for $125.00 plus tax, or two double queens for $138.00 plus tax, were the rooms available.
I said we would take the single queen room for $115.00 plus tax. He asked for how many nights. I stated that we would be checking out on Sunday, 10/29/2023. He said Okay, and he input our information.
He had printed out the paperwork, and I had signed and agreed to the $115.00 plus tax amount of state tax of $1.88 and occupation tax of $11.88, for a total of $128.76.
He gave us two room keys and explained that a full complimentary breakfast would be available in the lobby from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Check out at 11 a.m. The wifi password is located on our little room key holder envelope.
I had asked if there was a shuttle or taxi service in the area that we could use to go to the Mill Casino. He said there might be a taxi service, but he didn't know for sure. I thanked him for helping check us in.
We checked into our single-queen room #169. The room appeared to be clean upon entry. I walked into the bathroom to find hair in the toilet, along with hair on the shower walls. Mold along the bottom of the shower curtain. I am not the type of person to complain. I understand things happen or get missed. We looked past this to try to enjoy our stay and focus on our anniversary.
We left the room at about 8 p.m. We returned around 10:45 p.m. Once we got back to our room, we were getting ready for bed. The pillows seemed to look fluffy; once we laid down, they went flat. I called the front desk to see if they had an extra pillow. The guy at the front desk said that the maintenance man had just left and that they do not have extra pillows. I said, Oh, okay. I would have been more than happy to have gone to the front desk to get another one. He hung up on me. Once again, I am not the type of person to complain. He may be a new worker, learning his first job, or doing something with the phone. I get it. So, we went to sleep.
We had woken up at 7:30 a.m. freezing, as the heater seemed to be partially working. But it was no match for the cold draft coming from under and to the side of the front door. My girlfriend had asked me to go get her a coffee and juice from the complimentary breakfast. While she packed up our belongings to get back on the road, as we weren't going to use the shower, it was disgusting.
I walked over to the lobby to get some coffee and juice. As I walked into the lobby, there was an old woman with remnants of reddish hair and glasses at the front desk. She asked if she could help me. I said I was just here to get some coffee and juice before we checked out.
She said the breakfast was on the tables with the brown paper bags. I said, what are the bags for? She said this was breakfast. I asked if the bags had juice. She said no; we could purchase juice from the cooler, and the coffee is in our rooms. I told her I was told upon check-in there was a full breakfast in the morning when we checked in. A brown bag with a piece of fruit and a granola bar is not a "full breakfast". I said, it’s fine; we will stop somewhere along the way. She had asked who told me it was a full breakfast. I said this to the young blond man who checked us in.
I left the lobby and went back to our room. My girlfriend asked where her coffee and juice were. I said we would have to go and grab something along the way. The "full breakfast" was a piece of fruit and a granola bar. Coffee is in our rooms, and juice is extra. She had asked me to go get a business card or the manager's name so we could let them know of our experience.
I returned to the lobby once again. I had asked if she knew the name of the guy who checked us in. She said his name was Tom. I asked her name, and she said Rose. I said, okay, do you have a business card? She said no; we don't have business cards. I said okay. Is there a manager available or an email address to contact the manager? She said no, they don't have a manager; she was the senior employee on the property. I asked who I would contact regarding our stay. She said we could write a review. I said okay; I'd be back shortly to check out.
We packed up our belongings, and I walked over to the lobby to check out. Rose asked what she could do for me, and I said we would like to check out of our room #169. She said okay, and I turned in our two room keys. She typed away on the computer; she said she was sorry for the misinformation. I told her she may want to have the maintenance man look at the door seal, as the cold draft was no match for the in-room heater. She said that was not okay and offered to remove $25.00 off our room price. I said this was very kind, and we would appreciate it. She asked if I wanted a receipt. I said yes. She handed me the receipt, and we left on 10/29/2023 at about 8:45am.
Once I came home and checked my bank account, I was charged $163.76. I looked at the receipt I was given, which also didn't look right.
The receipt I have shown $138.76, which was not the rate I was told when checking in, this was the rate for the single King room. I was told the rate was $115.00 plus tax. Occupancy tax was $11.88, and state tax was $1.88 for a single queen room. for a total of $128.76 on Saturday night.
There was also no $25.00 taken off on my receipt upon checking out, like Rose said she was going to do for us. Which would have brought the total down to $103.76.
My account was charged for $163.76 which is $60.00 dollars more, than what I had agreed to.
I would like to speak with someone regarding these unauthorized charges.
