Hotel Sylvia is a boutique destination for book lovers on the Oregon Coast. This iconic property (c. 1910) has operated for more than forty years as a quiet literary retreat. The hotel is named after the legendary 20th century bookseller and publisher Sylvia Beach. After purchasing the hotel in 2024, VIP Hospitality completed a full renovation in 2025 to preserve its legacy for decades to come. Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the hotel’s breakfast café, lobby, and most guestrooms boast stunning views of the coast. A dedication to literary culture is felt in details throughout, including original artwork and bookshelves in every room. Each of the 22 guest rooms has a literary theme: seven are dedicated to specific authors, and the others are tastefully decorated with a literary genre (Drama, Fantasy, Historical, Literary Non-Fiction, Mystery, and Romance). The top floor of the hotel houses the James Joyce Library, a quiet attic space to read and write.

Alex and the rest of the staff were great! Hotel appears to be having some electrical issues however, not unexpected in an old building, but appears to be the same issues as last time I was here years ago. Otherwise nice if you’re looking for a boutique hotel to read books in.

Historic Nye Beach is a treat and The Hotel Sylvia is a mainstay for the quaint seaside hamlet. Very civilized indeed.

My wife’s littler sister passed away, they made it special for her with balloons and a note. the room was very cozy and memorable!

Not for me
This is a quaint well maintained boutique property. It is located in Nye beach with easy walking distance to several restaurants. This hotel is not for the elderly or physically challenged. It is three floors and no elevators. We were assigned a third floor room and fortunately there was a first floor room available when I said I could not navigate the stairs. The room was very clean and cute but extremely small with the mattress being very low making it difficult to get in and out of bed. Especially with the wall being two feet from bed. They also have a door slamming contest beginning at 7am. Over all a nice place in a great location but just not for me.

Best peaceful retreat on the coast
This is THE place to unplug and unwind. The extensive remodel has created beautiful spaces for reading, writing and ocean watching. They stylishly remodeled with great nods to the history of the building and namesake. Now the BEST part, Cafe Sylvia!! Excellent food, excellent service!! Hailey manages the room with efficiency and warmth!! She was one of the highlights of our stay, as was the entire staff. Alex is always eager to help in any way, Bravo team!!
