Hotel Sylvia is a boutique destination for book lovers on the Oregon Coast. This iconic property (c. 1910) has operated for more than forty years as a quiet literary retreat. The hotel is named after the legendary 20th century bookseller and publisher Sylvia Beach. After purchasing the hotel in 2024, VIP Hospitality completed a full renovation in 2025 to preserve its legacy for decades to come. Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the hotel’s breakfast café, lobby, and most guestrooms boast stunning views of the coast. A dedication to literary culture is felt in details throughout, including original artwork and bookshelves in every room. Each of the 22 guest rooms has a literary theme: seven are dedicated to specific authors, and the others are tastefully decorated with a literary genre (Drama, Fantasy, Historical, Literary Non-Fiction, Mystery, and Romance). The top floor of the hotel houses the James Joyce Library, a quiet attic space to read and write.

Successful escape from electronics
We had truly enjoyable two nights at Sylvia hotel, without media! Freedom from everyday electronics felt truly fantastic! Instead we did some writing, beach walks, browsing local shops and coffee places, board games and found enjoyment putting together a 500 piece puzzle. Hotel breakfast was delicious, recommended! Alex was helping us during our stay and did marvelous job!

Best place to reset in Newport
I love staying in Hotel Sylvia. Whenever I need to make sure I get the full rest and I need, I stay here and enjoy the music, the good breakfast, the nicely decorated rooms and common spaces. Any hotel can be nice but the best part is how highly curated it feels and the great service we always receive from Alex and Blake. I love this place!

Hotel Sylvia Newport, OR
Over all the hotel (pet friendly) and staff were wonderful. The location on NYE Beach was perfect which over looked the ocean with access to the beach below. I didn’t expect a full breakfast in this small boutique hotel but it was served each morning at a price. Reservations a must on weekends. The serving staff was great! I need to call out the desk person Alex. He was extremely helpful and was concerned for our stay. It might be because we had a dog and we were on the ground floor but the room was small for the 3 of us. I don’t know about the rooms on the upper floors. Not a good child hotel. Great for adults!

A gem of a hotel, still a find after all these years
Twenty years ago, I read of Sylvia Beach Hotel, portrayed as a simple but elegant four story building, with comfortable common spaces, wonderfully positioned on the Pacific shore. With its literary focused decor, I reserved its AmyTan room, and was well satisfied with its cleanliness, ocean views, outdoor deck, and tasty breakfast menu. Last week, though under new management (now the Hotel Sylvia), I found the same respite again.
