Hotel Sylvia is a boutique destination for book lovers on the Oregon Coast. This iconic property (c. 1910) has operated for more than forty years as a quiet literary retreat. The hotel is named after the legendary 20th century bookseller and publisher Sylvia Beach. After purchasing the hotel in 2024, VIP Hospitality completed a full renovation in 2025 to preserve its legacy for decades to come. Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the hotel’s breakfast café, lobby, and most guestrooms boast stunning views of the coast. A dedication to literary culture is felt in details throughout, including original artwork and bookshelves in every room. Each of the 22 guest rooms has a literary theme: seven are dedicated to specific authors, and the others are tastefully decorated with a literary genre (Drama, Fantasy, Historical, Literary Non-Fiction, Mystery, and Romance). The top floor of the hotel houses the James Joyce Library, a quiet attic space to read and write.

Beautiful experience
A wonderful stay! Alex is great - most friendly and goes above and beyond to help and guide. We had the Maya Angelou room, and what a view! And having the terrace is a great bonus. A great experience!

Loveliest Hotel in Newport!
We had a quick 1 night stay at Hotel Sylvia and we could not have had a better experience! Miranda and Alex were phenomenal as the front desk managers… they served top tier customer service and ensured we had anything we needed! To top off our stay, we had breakfast at Cafe Sylvia which was delicious. We will miss the hospitality that Hotel Sylvia extends - highly recommend!

Excellent location and truly one-of-a-kind stay. No TVs and phones. An oasis. Delicious breakfast.

An Enjoyable Hotel to be IN!!
It's mid-June. The Oregon Coast had, for June, an epic rainstorm and we spent a considerable amount of time in the hotel. I have to say, it was really great! There is a dining room on the bottom level and ample space on both the first and top floor for settling in with a good book, or online. The restaurant serves only breakfast but it is a very good meal with lots of choices. The employees were all consistently friendly and professional. We particularly liked Alex at the front desk, friendly, outspoken. He's a keeper! When I read reviews I always throw out the highs and the lows but, I have to say, I can't give this hotel anything but an 'excellent' rating. If you are somewhat flexible, you can find a decent rate for a stay here. It's not an inexpensive hotel, not that anything is on the coast these days.

One of a kind experience
My second visit here, and it won’t be the last. This place heals my soul. The ocean air and sunsets, the reminder of why I love books, reading, and writing, the amazing staff. It’s a special experience. Thanks especially to Miranda who went out of her way to help me.
