Vacation magic! ...Because we communicated with our hosts in advance.
We had the best trip ever. We definitely want to go back soon. The scenery is truly beautiful. It is vast and quiet, with no traffic sounds. This is a working ranch, but you are not required to participate in any ranching activities. There are 5 cabins and a handful of lodge rooms, a restaurant that serves 3 excellent meals a day, gracious hosts, and our group did indeed enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, tennis and fishing, as advertised. Their resident cowgirl, Larissa, was an absolute highlight of the trip. Her horses are friendly and steadfast, and her read of the guests' needs in terms of match with a horse and need for additional guidance or proximity is excellent. She is knowledgable, funny, easy-going, boundaried, prompt and patient. Truly, we can't say enough good about Larissa. She is a rare find. All 8 in my group agree.
Know before you go:
-Communicate thoroughly with the hosts before packing. Sit down and talk with friends and family who are going on the trip and come up with all the questions you may want to have answered. Don't take things for granted. This is a unique location. Know your resources, weather, directions, options and limitations so you can really enjoy your stay. Karen is friendly and more than willing to email back and forth with you in order to help you have the best possible stay.
- I was able to use my satellite GPS to track that I was on the road I thought I was on, but GPS will take you the wrong route during the last 40 minutes. The hosts provided excellent written directions. Given the terrain, plan your trip so you can arrive during daylight hours, so you don't start vacation stressed out.
-Pack for all four seasons in June. We encountered them all in a week. (Sunscreen, bugspray, hats, gloves, long and short sleeves, etc.) It snowed! We played in it. It melted the same day. It got into the high 70's one day. Generally it was temperate, but started out chilly. Again, this was June. Dress in layers, and wear layers on your horseback ride. Two hours can bring about quite a temperature shift in either direction! We're from Georgia, so we greatly enjoyed getting to experience something other than steamy heat in June!
-Bring your own bike and fishing gear. Figure out the fishing license situation ahead of time. Tall Town Bike & Camp in Lake View is a good resource, about an hour away. Again, email your hosts!
-You will be about 2.5 hours from Crater Lake, which is well worth building in time for on yor vacation, preferably at the start or end of the trip.
