About Painted Hills

Painted Hills

When you travel to the Painted Hills, you can see millions of years of history revealed in the layers of mountains of earth, one color at a time.

The hills get their name from the delicately colored stratifications in the soil and the yellows, golds, blacks and reds of the Painted Hills are best seen in the late afternoon. Tones and hue may appear to change from one visit to another, as the claystones differ with ever-changing light and moisture levels. Once you see them for yourself, it’s pretty easy to understand why the Painted Hills are one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

The Painted Hills are one of the three units that comprise the John Day Fossil Beds. Take time to also visit the Clarno Unit, with Mars-like pillars formed by waterfalls and volcanic sludge, and the Sheep Rock Unit, where fossils of plants and animals like saber-toothed cats are on display at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center. Scientists study 50 million years of plant and animal evolution and a collection of 40,000 fossils here, and you can learn how early cousins of elephants and rhinos roamed the earth you’re standing on. To get there, take the Journey Through Time Scenic Byway through the ghost town of Shaniko, then on to the town of Fossil (named after the mammoth bone found there), where you can dig for your own fossilized souvenir. Plan to stop at the Kam Wah Chung and Co. Museum, a perfectly preserved drugstore from a century ago.

Photographing the Painted Hills: The yellows, golds, blacks, and reds of the Painted Hills are beautiful at all times of the day, but are best lit for photography in the late afternoon. Changing light and moisture levels drastically affect the tones and hues visible in the hills. The seasons can also change the look of the Painted Hills radically. Spring often brings yellow wildflowers that grow in open areas and sometime even in the ripples of the hills. Winter can blanket the hills in a white coat, concealing the vibrant hues until the snow melts, revealing interspersed stripes of gold and red.

Know Before You Go:

    Brilliantly Beautiful

This was a bit of a drive, but worth it! Be sure to drive down to the cove area too, more colors on display. I found out there is a hike 30 minutes away at a place called sheep rock that is spectacular, sorry I missed adding it in there.

    Pretty

It’s pretty and the board walk is very nice. We also visited the Clarno unit, the painted hills was much prettier of the two.

    Gorgeous hills, beautiful hike

I had gone to Zhangye at the other side of the world in China. I was surprised to see something just like it nearby in Oregon. It’s a smaller park but it is stunningly gorgeous. Highly suggest Carroll Rim Trail. I was debating whether it was worth the extra effort but I am glad I made my up there. Amazing panoramic views!

    Very pretty

Very beautiful and interesting. We drove out from Bend so about 1 1/2 hours drive. Glad we did! Easy short trails. Spend a couple hours hiking around and bring a picnic. Nice picnic area at entrance to park.

Very pretty place to go on a Road Trip

We made the trip from Bend on our Oregon Road Trip last summer. The drive there was half the fun. Once you get there, you will see some of the painted hills as you drive in and from the overlook. You will want to drive back to the Painted Cove Trail, which is very pretty. I will say, it is a lot smaller than I was expecting. the Painted Cove Trail would take 10-15 minutes if you just walked it. The overlook as excellent views into a valley. I know there is more to this park than what you can see from the road, but from places you can drive too, you can knock this out in a few hours and move on. Areas of Zion and the Badlands National Parks are much more elaborate, which is why I knock this down to 4 start. It is definitely worth stopping at on you travels and a must if you are a National Park Geek like me, but temper your expectations.
