Situated on the confluence of four rivers, the town of St. Helens (just 30 miles from Portland) offers nirvana for fishermen, paddlers and anyone else with a yen for the outdoors. Hike, bike or horseback-ride on Sauvie Island; explore sites recorded in Lewis and Clark’s journals; relax in the charming shops, cafés and galleries of Olde Towne, a Nationally Registered Historic District on the waterfront. Wrap up the day in one of the town’s Victorian B&Bs, two of which overlook the Columbia River.
