A beautiful place to visit, lots of camping along the river. You can't raft through these falls because they are on Indian territory.
My white water rafting guide told me this is the very place of Class VI rapid. Some brave experienced rafter tried this place, and almost died with many broken bones. This place is located about 3 miles south (East?) from Maupin. I just drove down here to see how wild it would be. It was indeed a very wild rapid. However, I did not dare to step down to near it because the land belonged to the local native Indians. I did not acquire permission.
The power of the water is something to respect. If you get lucky you will get to see fishermen on the platforms.
Not able to say Sherars Falls is the only thing you enjoy taking this road to the Deshutes River. The entire area is worth spending time. Maupin has very charming places to stay and the Maupin Market has a deli that never lets you down if you are hungry. There is also a back road that takes you to Grass Valley which is located on 97. Not to be missed in my opinion.
The falls are beautiful and loud, sounds like the ocean on the Oregon coast during a winter storm. All the white water at the bottom of the falls looks violent and makes me wonder how the Salmon and Steelhead make it past that point, but they do.
