Something for every rider, right above town.
Sometimes it’s nice to have some good riding right in your backyard. You can’t always take a road trip to some epic trail in a different part of the state; maybe you’re just looking for an after-work ride that still keeps your interest. The Lower 66 trail system (it covers 66 acres, so…), perched right above Prineville on the edge of town, fits the bill. Whether you live there or are just visiting, it’s a great way to get in a little fun.
The system offers five trail options, from easy to moderate to black-diamond – all in one concentrated dose of roughly 4 miles total with all options. You can ride any of the sections in either direction.
Rocky Raccoon and Brewer’s Choice are easy to moderate loops that roll out from the trailhead – Rocky to the north, Brewer’s to the south. With just a scattering of rocks, they each make a nice warm-up or introduction for more novice riders, and Rocky Raccoon has a picturesque stone bridge crossing a seasonal stream.
Pebbles is accessed from either loop, and connects the two – it’s a more technical section, with armored rock, and offers great views from the ridge at the top of the system.
Let ‘er Buck throws some technical, black-diamond trail at you and connects to Rim Job, a recent addition that edges along the precipice above town, looking down on the golf course below and adding 2 miles to the network.
Many riders start L66 at Good Bike Co. LLC and ride the 2nd Street bike lane all the way over the Crooked River to the trailhead at Southwest Park Drive. This is a good choice, because parking at the trailhead is very limited — please respect the local residents and use good judgment when parking in the neighborhood.
L66 offers a great all-ages area for skill-building, and its location right on the edge of Prineville means it’s also a solid choice for those looking to get in some fast laps close to town. This is a great asset for the local riding community – and for anyone looking to get in a quick hour of riding without wasting a bunch of drive time to and from their ride.
