TripAdvisor Ratings & Reviews
This is my favourite place to stay in Portland and I stay here whenever we're in town. The staff are always great and the rooms are beautiful. The location is perfect. Easy walking most everywhere you'd want to go and on the transit lines if you're going further. It's always a treat to stay at the Sentinel and I always look forward to returning.
Sentinel Hotel, Portland OR
Terrific hotel in the heart of downtown Portland. Really cool old-fashioned layout with beautiful lobby complete with wine bar, cocktail bar, and restaurant. I arrived in rainy weather, pulled up to the valet area and two valets literally ran up to my car with an umbrella. They were terrific. My room was nice, clean, and offered a mini bar with a variety of drinks and snacks. 24 hour room service was available as well. Bed was tightly made and very comfortable. Unfortunately I was only in town for the night, I would’ve loved to have some more time to try Jakes restaurant, the wine bar on site, and poke around the city. I had a drink in Jackknife at the hotel, which was crowded and jovial for happy hour. Fast and friendly service at the bar, which was a perfect meeting spot for a colleague of mine prior to enjoying a downtown Portland restaurant. Last thing: upon leaving the lobby I was content walking the 3 blocks to the restaurant in the drizzle, price of staying in Portland, when a hotel valet chased after me with a Sentinel umbrella to take on the walk. That sums up the service at the Sentinel. Was very pleased and if I end up back in Portland down the line, I won’t even look to stay anywhere else.
Our favorite hotel in Portland
We love this hotel. My wife and I stay here a couple times a year just to get away. This hotel is located by (and above!) great restaurants and must do's in Portland. There is a Starbucks accessible from the lobby, which we enjoy. We always rent a room with access to "the room at the end of the hall" which is stocked with food, treats, and beverages to meet anyone's taste. This year we selected the Whiskey Package where we gained entry into the Multnomah Whiskey Library. We had drinks and dessert. The bartender made us variations of Old Fashioned's that were all excellent. The desserts were large enough to share and delicious. A good paring of hotel and an interesting establishment. We would have never gone there otherwise, and were pleased with the package. The hotel gets an A+ from us and we are already thinking about our next mini vacation at the Sentinel.
Stunning rooms, historically amazing! Takes you back in time..but Elegantly!
Our corner room with two windows (extra fee)was very spacious, clean and very cozy. I loved that when we walked in room, the old time radio was playing early 1900's music! NICE TOUCH! Parking a slight walk (in the rain) parking garage just a block away. I believe they have Valet service. We were here for an event, and WOW the ball room (I will call it that) was HUGE and ornate! THE detail they put in to the buildings back then...just wow! Bed was super comfortable and has HUGE feather pillows. Over all the room was a bit expensive but beautiful. BUT what made it feel a bit cheap was the plastic lock on the cabinet where the refrigerator is. It has a "break the plastic lock mechanism" instructions on it.(basically to see if you have looked or used the refrigerator that is behind locked door.) AND then there is a PRICE SHEET for amenities, candy, chips, snacks, drinks, condoms(cute his and hers package of massage oil) and such. I think Management should rethink this "display" I felt it cheapened the room very much. I was expecting at LEAST access to the refrigerator without feeling like a criminal. Bathroom has pedestal sink and NO counter-space at all. A little 3 tiers shelf sits next to the sink so that helps a bit. The windows open to allow fresh air in without screens but are secured so they don't open all the way. Bathrobes are furnishes but be sure NOT to pack one when you leave or you pay $150.00! It was fun having a night out with the husband though! OH the restaurants/food was amazing! BREAKFAST at Jakes was wonderful.
Nice hotel but be aware of a few things
I stayed here for 5 nights over new years. The hotel itself is lovely and the rooms are very nice. The location is also perfect for tourists. I had three issues with this hotel though. #1: The $28.00 per day resort fee is ridiculous. Never used the gym once so getting charged for no reason is just wrong. #2: I booked through Expedia and one of the features they advertised (and a main reason I booked this hotel) was that the hotel had free fitness & yoga classes. This is completely false. There are no yoga classes in the hotel. They gave me yoga class vouchers to a yoga studio 20 min walk away. Really disappointing. #3: We enjoyed new years eve at Jackknife, the bar adjacent to the lobby. It's a great bar and we had a great night. We put our drinks on our room tab. A few days after checking out of the hotel, I saw transaction for $680AUD on my bank statement! I would have been lucky to have spent $250AUD. I'd been ripped off! I called the hotel to complain and to ask for an itemised list of this charge. This was 3 weeks ago and still no answer from the hotel. I have no choice but to dispute this charge with my bank now which means cancelling my credit card. It's left a really sour taste for our stay. Based on these things, I would not stay here again.
