cooked warm meals.I was not disappointed. In fact, it was painful to leave after only three nights. It only took me an hour and 18 minutes to drive the 36 miles to the Roads End trailhead, for the shortest possible hike to this peak. Many people would have a great time just staying on the ranch and soaking up the ambience. It is a big ranch with flooded green fields as far as you can see, and hundreds of cattle. A gravel road from the upper hay barn allows you to survey the green fields below you. Indeed I followed the great horned owls around each night, and when I first stepped outside I found the coyote hunting. He let me watch until I grew tired of watching. A night hike yields nighthawks swooping for bugs, and poor wills sitting on the road jumping up for bugs. I came for the nature, and there is an abundance of it on the ranch. Hard-working Janice can visit every evening and prepare a fresh supper just for you for a modest price. The cooked food is very good. The fresh fruit and salad become moldy if kept long in the fridge. Breakfast is cold except for what you microwave, but very good. A warm breakfast for a group may be negotiable, but you are not allowed to cook in the full kitchen, only warm food in the oven or microwave. Bring a traveling companion who can enjoy things on the rustic side. Not someone who will become unglued, if she finds the wallpaper or linoleum is. There is no air conditioning but the downstairs living room somehow retains some coolness anyway. I learned to get the window fans going an hour before bedtime once the evening cool appears outside, for the upstairs bedrooms. From the dining table, you hear every 10 minutes from the chimney a noise that sounds like a family of squirrels. After a while you realize they never enter the house. You will be alone in this once grand house until Janice arrives to cook supper.
The B&B has a ranch house feel to it that is perfect for the area. It is not a hotel with room service rather a welcome break from the harsh elements mixed with some country cooking via Janice. She is very warm and freindly as a host and a fantastic cook. We enjoy this ranch retreat as a family a few times each year and it never dissapoints.
We stopped on our way to California and stayed at this Inn. Janice was there to greet us with a homemade dinner. The meal was VERY yummy, and Janice was extremely friendly and welcoming! The ranch was beautiful! The house and immediate grounds could use some TLC. We stayed in an upstairs room that was very cute! The beds were comfy, and it met our needs. It was restful and relaxing. We enjoyed our stay!
Our overall immediate impression of the exterior and interior appearance of this B & B was one of sheer neglect. The dilapidated and uninviting exterior appearance extended inside where we encountered grungy-looking furniture and general poor housekeeping as evidenced by dirty floors and windowsills filled with dead bugs, a lot of dead bugs. Additionally, there were several live wasps congregating in the living room. The personable and apologetic house manager, Cheyenne, stated that the wasps unfortunately "live within the walls" of this "hundred-year-old house," coming and going as they please. She also related a story of how a previous guest last year invited 30 wasps into her room by simply turning on a heater! We experienced an overriding instinct to run away from this place as fast as possible but reluctantly decided to stay based on driving fatigue and the improbability of finding a decent place to stay in the remote area in which we found ourselves in. We found the room to be barely passable. Anthony Melchiorri of Hotel Impossible would have had a field day inspecting this place! We found a toilet that had obviously not been cleaned any time in the recent past (see picture). The water in the shower was lukecold, although it was somewhat warmer in the sink. There was no extra toilet paper in the room or even a Kleenex box. There was only 1 live wasp hovering around the light fixture (hooray) that my husband quickly dispensed of, as well as dozens of bug parts (mostly wasps) underneath the bed. Oddly enough, I actually smiled when I saw wasp legs and other body parts dangling from the bathroom ceiling fan. There were some live house spiders in the room as well. The overall condition of the rug itself was fair at best with several stains, and it obviously needed shampooing. Out of curiosity, I opened the storage doors inside the room, one of which contained what appeared to be neatly folded extra bedding in a pile on the floor next to the vacuum cleaner and other supplies. Although Cheyenne is a good cook, I do not consider delicious quiche and doughnut holes to constitute a "full country breakfast." We learned that the owners of this inn do not live onsite but rather out of state (not surprising), and the house manager does the best she can within her allotted time to tend to cleaning. Bottom line: We are stunned by the owner's indifference and callous attitude with regard to cleanliness and public safety! The buck stops at the top which is you! The wasp infestation that has clearly been dealt with inadequately should be dealt with aggressively or at least made apparent to guests ahead of time. Do you know that one of the Oregon state regulations for B & B's does mention insect control? People with life-threatening allergies to stinging insects should NOT stay here! Much more time and resources should be devoted to general cleaning, deep cleaning, and household maintenance that would make the house safer and more inviting and appealing to guests. Guests should be warned that passage on the gravel road leading to this place is questionable in inclement weather! I found the website to be somewhat misleading as well, as the pictures look much nicer than the actual rooms. The website mentions "stargazing" and "quiet relaxing," but I would NEVER stay here for those purposes! Also, the description of the history is somewhat ambiguous in that one cannot discern clearly where the owners actually live. Upon first glance, it seems like the owners might live onsite but, as mentioned, actually live out of state and sadly appear to have little vested interest in the day-to-day cleanliness and maintenance of this place. Outdoor folks might be totally oblivious to the unkempt condition and perils of this place, but I would stay far, far away!
Getting to this B&B is a bit tricky, the satellite navigator from the car did not recognize the name of the dirt road leading to the entrance. It's located quite a bit north of the little town of Drewsey, but is in a beautiful setting in the hills. The B&B is managed by a lovely young lady with her husband and baby John Ross. We also ordered a meal for $12.50 pp, decent without frills and made for us by the hostess (on her birthday we discovered). The setting of the B&B is spectacular, behind a large old fashioned ranch. The room was decent, but not very clean (dead flies on the window sill, bathroom rotting away in the corner next to the bath). The screen door at the entrance was broken, leaving the porch open for a bird to build its nest in the ceiling lamp. No AC, but a window fan, which was ok because at night it gets cooler. It could use some updating and fixing, something the hostess was aware of it seemed to me. We met another nice couple from Canada and shared dinner and a good breakfast with them. You can only secure your reservation with a check or money transfer, both very difficult for travelers from oversea like us. I had to arrange with a friend living in the States to send a check for us. The rest we paid in cash at the B&B.
