Rogue River: Wild
Just about anything you find on TravelOregon.com can be added to your own personal Trip Planner. Find out how.
The Rogue River is one of the most dramatic rivers in the world. The United States Congress recognized this when it designated it in 1968 as one of the original eight rivers to be protected for all generations under the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. Flowing the peaks of the Cascades through the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains, the Rogue River offers some of the planet’s finest rafting, kayaking, fishing and jet boat experiences. This wild canyon is home to a host of plants and animals and while traveling through you may see black bear, deer, bald eagles, osprey and more.
In the summer, the warm water and fun, intermediate rapids make the Rogue an ideal wilderness rafting trip for families. Jet boat tours leave daily from two different locations on the river. Fall and winter is prime fishing season for steelhead and salmon. A truly unique feature of the Rogue is the ability to either camp under the stars, or stay in historic riverside lodges.
Once the home of the Rogue Indians, there are many colorful stories of the canyon’s history. Early pioneers came here in search of gold and land to settle. Zane Grey, the famous author who invented the literary genre of the Western, loved the Rogue and built his own cabin along its banks which stands today in his memory. This is just one of the many historic sites of interest that color the palette of history on any Rogue River adventure.
