Appearance almost stopped us from going in, but turned out to be a very good dinner. Rib eye was properly prepared and tasty, service was very good and our cocktails were superb.

A pleasant discovery in the Oregon hinterland
We found this excellent restaurant open all day despite it being the Fourth of July. The place is beautiful, the welcome was warm, and we had an excellent dinner. The next morning, we had an excellent breakfast. The quality-price ratio is also noteworthy. Truly satisfying.

Great meals at really good prices! Great service too!
What a pleasant surprise! We have visited John Day many times and somehow missed this place. We came into town on Sunday and pretty much all the other places were closed. I am glad they were because we would not have found our new favorite place to eat! Huge portions and served quickly and piping hot! I ordered the Rib Eye steak. It was a great cut, the menu said 16oz but it seemed bigger than that! It was cooked perfectly and was well seasoned and very flavorful. And for $25, with a good salad and all the trimmings it is an absolute bargain! Our table also have a wonderful pizza, a huge Cobb Salad and a senior Open Faced Beef sandwich all of which were far above average! Add in a bartender/waiter who provided exceptional service and rounded out a great meal. BRAVO!!!! We will be back!

Food was so great we stopped back by on our return trip home.
We stopped by for food to go on our trip through John Day and it was so good we decided to eat there on our return trip. Super friendly staff, everything was clean and the food was wonderful! Added bonus there's a cute little boutique in the entryway to browse while you're waiting for your food!! If you have a bib the BBQ Bronc Burger is wonderful!

Best bacon in the USA
I visit d John Day in 2020 when driving cross-country from MA to WA and had the pleasure of eating at the Outpost for breakfast. The meal was amazing but I can can say without a doubt they may have had the best bacon in the country. Almost four years later I still remind my wife about the bacon and think about it on a regular basis. Some day I’ll re-visit John Day solely for a meal at the Outpost.
